Abstract

A retail enhancement system is disclosed. The retail enhancement system may include a sensor module configured to obtain a data about an individual during an athletic activity. The sensor module may be configured to be removably attached to a first article of footwear to be worn by the individual during the athletic activity. The retail enhancement system may also include an electronic device that is separate from the sensor module. The electronic device may be a dedicated device in a retail environment and may be configured to collect personal information about the individual, associate the sensor module with the individual, receive the data about the individual from the sensor module, determine a characteristic about a gait of the individual based on the data about the individual, and provide a recommendation about a second article of footwear to be worn by the individual to the individual.

Claims

1 . A retail enhancement system, comprising:
 a sensor module configured to obtain a data about an individual during an athletic activity, wherein the sensor module is configured to be removably attached to a first article of footwear to be worn by the individual during the athletic activity; and an electronic device that is separate from the sensor module, wherein the electronic device is a dedicated device in a retail environment and is configured to:
 collect personal information about the individual regarding at least one of height, weight, gender, shoe size, an athletic goal, an intended athletic environment or terrain, an intended athletic activity duration, an intended athletic activity frequency, an intended athletic activity distance, a brand of a previous article of footwear owned by the individual, or a location of a prior injury;
 associate the sensor module with the individual;
 receive the data about the individual from the sensor module;
 determine a characteristic about a gait of the individual based on the data about the individual, the characteristic about the gait of the individual comprising at least one of foot strike type, rate of pronation, or degree of pronation; and
 provide a recommendation about a second article of footwear to be worn by the individual to the individual based on the characteristic about the gait of the individual and the personal information of the individual.

         2 . The retail enhancement system of claim 1 , wherein the electronic device is further configured to register the individual.

         3 . The retail enhancement system of claim 1 , wherein the electronic device is further configured to pair the sensor module to the electronic device.

         4 . The retail enhancement system of claim 3 , wherein the electronic device comprises a graphical display configured to display an update as to a status of the pairing of the sensor module to the electronic device.

         5 . The retail enhancement system of claim 1 , wherein the characteristic about the gait of the individual is determined based on the severity of the foot strike type, rate of pronation, or degree of pronation.

         6 . A retail enhancement system, comprising:
 a sensor module configured to obtain a data about an individual during an athletic activity, wherein the sensor module is configured to be removably attached to a first article of footwear to be worn by the individual during the athletic activity; and an electronic device that is separate from the sensor module, wherein the electronic device is a mobile device and is configured to:
 collect personal information about the individual regarding at least one of height, weight, gender, shoe size, an athletic goal, an intended athletic environment or terrain, an intended athletic activity duration, an intended athletic activity frequency, an intended athletic activity distance, a brand of a previous article of footwear owned by the individual, or a location of a prior injury;
 associate the sensor module with the individual;
 receive the data about the individual from the sensor module;
 determine a characteristic about a gait of the individual based on the data about the individual, the characteristic about the gait of the individual comprising at least one of foot strike type, rate of pronation, or degree of pronation; and
 provide a recommendation about a second article of footwear to be worn by the individual to the individual based on the characteristic about the gait of the individual and the personal information of the individual.

         7 . The retail enhancement system of claim 6 , wherein the mobile device is a mobile phone or a tablet computer.

         8 . The retail enhancement system of claim 6 , wherein the electronic device is further configured to register the individual.

         9 . The retail enhancement system of claim 6 , wherein the electronic device is further configured to pair the sensor module to the electronic device.

         10 . The retail enhancement system of claim 9 , wherein the electronic device comprises a graphical display configured to display an update as to a status of the pairing of the sensor module to the electronic device.

         11 . The retail enhancement system of claim 6 , wherein the characteristic about the gait of the individual is determined based on the severity of the foot strike type, rate of pronation, or degree of pronation.

         12 . A retail enhancement system, comprising:
 a sensor module configured to obtain a data about an individual during an athletic activity, wherein the sensor module is configured to be removably attached to at least one of a body part of the individual during the athletic activity or a first piece of athletic equipment to be used by the individual during the athletic activity; and an electronic device that is separate from the sensor module, wherein the electronic device is configured to:
 associate the sensor module with the individual;
 receive the data about the individual from the sensor module;
 determine a characteristic about the individual based on the data about the individual, the characteristic about the individual comprising at least one of a speed, a jump height, a jump force, a jump distance, a jump trajectory, an athletic activity force, an athletic activity distance, an impact force, a characterization of a specific type of athletic movement, a reaction time measurement, a rate of rotation, a plane of rotation, a force profile, or a characteristic about a gait of the individual; and
 customize a piece of athletic equipment based on the characteristic about the individual.
