Abstract
Analytics are collected to monitor and report data usage of enterprise applications running on a mobile device. A second line service agent and an analytics agent assure that the mobile device is configured for analytics collection. Once configured, cellular data usage of applications that are monitored by the analytics engine are detected and a VPN connection is established for routing the communications between the monitored app an a public website. If the mobile device switches to WiFi usage, the analytics agent disconnects the VPN connection and routes data directly to the public website. Thus, data usage of the monitored applications can be reported by the VPN gateway.
Claims
exact text as granted — not AI-modifiedWhat is claimed is:
1 . A system for collecting and reporting analytics data related to cellular data usage by particular applications running on a mobile device, the system comprising:
a mobile device including a processing unit; an analytics agent app loaded onto the mobile device; the analytics agent app including instructions that when executed by the processing unit operating on the mobile device are configured to:
cooperatively provision the mobile device to be configured for collecting analytics;
identify each app of a plurality of apps residing on the mobile device as being monitored or unmonitored apps;
detect mobile data from a particular monitored app;
initiate a connection between the mobile device and a website exercised by the particular monitored app;
route data activity of the particular monitored app over the connection to the web site;
the connection being configured to track usage data of the particular app report the usage data of the particular monitored app to a server.
2 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the analytics agent app is further configured to:
detect WiFi data from the particular monitored app; cancel the connection; route data activity of the particular monitored app directly to the website over the WiFi.
3 . The system of claim 2 , wherein the analytics agent app cancels the connection by requesting a connection controller to cancel the connection.
4 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the analytics agent app is further configured to:
detect mobile data from a particular unmonitored app; route data activity of the particular unmonitored app directly to a website exercised by the particular unmonitored app.
5 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the analytics agent app is configured to identify each app of a plurality of apps residing on the mobile device as being monitored or unmonitored apps by referring to a data analytics policy.
6 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the analytics agent app is configured to identify each app of a plurality of apps residing on the mobile device as being monitored or unmonitored apps by referring to a data analytics policy received from an external device.
7 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the analytics agent app is configured to identify each app of a plurality of apps residing on the mobile device as being monitored or unmonitored apps by interacting with EMM software on the mobile device.
8 . A method for collecting and reporting analytics data related to cellular data usage by particular applications running on a mobile device, the method comprising:
an analytics agent app operating on the mobile device identifying each app of a plurality of apps residing on the mobile device as being monitored or unmonitored apps; detecting mobile data from a particular monitored app; initiating a connection between the mobile device and a website exercised by the particular monitored app through a connection controller; routing data activity of the particular monitored app over the connection to the web site; tracking usage data of the particular app; and reporting the usage data of the particular monitored app to a third party.
9 . The method of claim 8 , further comprising:
detecting WiFi data from the particular monitored app; cancelling the connection; routing data activity of the particular monitored app directly to the website over WiFi.
10 . The method of claim 9 , wherein the action of cancelling the connection comprises sending a cancellation command to the connection controller.
11 . The method of claim 8 , further comprising:
detecting mobile data from a particular unmonitored app; and routing data activity of the particular unmonitored app directly to a website exercised by the particular unmonitored app.
12 . The method of claim 8 , wherein the action of the analytics agent app identifying each app of a plurality of apps residing on the mobile device as being monitored or unmonitored apps comprises accessing a data analytics policy.
13 . The method of claim 8 , wherein the action of the analytics agent app identifying each app of a plurality of apps residing on the mobile device as being monitored or unmonitored apps comprises accessing a data analytics policy received from an external device.
14 . The method of claim 8 , wherein the action of the analytics agent app identifying each app of a plurality of apps residing on the mobile device as being monitored or unmonitored apps comprises interacting with EMM software on the mobile device.Cited by (0)
