Abstract

An emotion-based authentication service can obtain data associated with a user device, identify an emotion associated with the data, detect an authentication request that requests authentication of the user device using an emotion-based authentication service, generate, based on the emotion and the data, a challenge for the user device and an expected response to the challenge, receive, from the user device, a response to the challenge, and determine if the user device is to be authenticated based on the response to the challenge and the expected response to the challenge.

Claims

2 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the emotion-based authentication service is configured to:
detect an authentication request that requests authentication of the user device for the transaction; determine, for the transaction, an authentication level; and generate, based on the emotion, the authentication level, and the image, the challenge for the user device and an expected response to the challenge, the expected response comprising the indication of emotion.

3 . The system of claim 2 , wherein identifying the emotion comprises receiving, from the user device, data that defines the emotion at a plurality of levels of specificity comprising a general category of emotion and a specific emotion that falls in the general category of emotion, and wherein generating the challenge based on the authentication level comprises specifying the expected response as the general category of emotion at a first authentication level and as the specific emotion at a second authentication level.

4 . The system of claim 1 , wherein identifying the emotion comprises receiving, from the user device, data that defines the emotion at a plurality of levels of specificity comprising a general category of emotion and a specific emotion that falls in the general category of emotion.

5 . The system of claim 1 , wherein presenting the challenge comprises presenting, at the user device, a further user interface comprising the image and a plurality of user interface controls, wherein each of the plurality of user interface controls is selectable to indicate a respective indication of emotion of the plurality of indications of emotions.

         6 . A method comprising:
obtaining, at a user device comprising a processor, an image; presenting, at the user device, a user interface comprising the image; identifying, at the user device, an emotion associated with the image; providing, by the user device and to an emotion-based authentication service, the image and an indication of emotion; requesting, by the user device, a transaction; receiving, by the user device and from the emotion-based authentication service, a challenge comprising the image and a plurality of indications of emotions comprising the indication of emotion; presenting, at the user device, the challenge; obtaining, by the user device, a response to the challenge, the response comprising a further selection of a one of the plurality of indications of emotions; and providing, by the user device and to the emotion-based authentication service, the further selection of the one of the plurality of indications of emotions for authentication.

7 . The method of claim 6 , further comprising:
registering with the emotion-based authentication service, wherein registering comprises obtaining an opt-in at the user device for using emotion-based authentication.

8 . The method of claim 6 , wherein identifying the emotion comprises receiving, from the user device, data that defines the emotion at a plurality of levels of specificity comprising a general category of emotion and a specific emotion that falls in the general category of emotion.

9 . The method of claim 6 , wherein the emotion-based authentication service is configured to:
detect an authentication request that requests authentication of the user device for the transaction; determine, for the transaction, an authentication level; and generate, based on the emotion, the authentication level, and the image, the challenge for the user device and an expected response to the challenge, the expected response comprising the indication of emotion.

10 . The method of claim 6 , wherein a selection of indication of emotion is made via the user interface, the user interface further comprising a further plurality of indications of emotions comprising the indication of emotion.

11 . The method of claim 6 , wherein presenting the challenge comprises presenting, at the user device, a further user interface comprising the image and a plurality of user interface controls, wherein each of the plurality of user interface controls is selectable to indicate a respective indication of emotion of the plurality of indications of emotions.

12 . The method of claim 6 , further comprising:
obtaining, from data sources, additional indications of the emotion; and generating the challenge based on the additional indications of the emotion.

13 . The method of claim 12 , wherein the data sources comprise a social networking platform and a messaging platform.

14 . The method of claim 6 , wherein the image was included in a message sent from the user device, wherein obtaining the image comprises obtaining the image from the message, and wherein identifying the emotion comprises determining that the emotion was specified in the message sent from the user device.

15 . A computer storage medium having computer-executable instructions stored thereon that, when executed by a processor, cause the processor to perform operations comprising:
