Abstract

A method for scavenging free radicals in a cell using a Chenopodium formosanum ( Djulis ) extract. In particular, the Chenopodium formosanum ( Djulis ) extract is obtained by extraction of Chenopodium formosanum ( Djulis ) with an aqueous solvent.

What is claimed is: 
     
         1 . A method for scavenging free radicals in a cell, comprising contacting the cell with a composition containing an effective amount of a  Chenopodium formosanum  ( Djulis ) extract obtained by extraction of  Chenopodium formosanum  ( Djulis ) with an aqueous solvent. 
     
     
         2 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein the total flavonoid content of the  Chenopodium formosanum  ( Djulis ) extract is at least 1000 ppm. 
     
     
         3 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein the total polyphenol content of the  Chenopodium formosanum  ( Djulis ) extract is at least 400 ppm. 
     
     
         4 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein the composition is a pharmaceutical composition, a health food composition, a food composition, or a cosmetic composition.
