Probiotic formulations and methods for use

Abstract

Provided herein are compositions comprising a biocompatible microsphere, a biofilm-generating probiotic bacterium, a prebiotic, and/or a prebiofilmic. Methods for preparing and formulating the compositions and methods for treating or preventing a disease using the compositions are also provided.

A method of treating or alleviating depression or an anxiety disorder in a subject in need thereof, the method comprising administering to the subject a therapeutically effective amount of a composition comprising  Lactobacillus reuteri  (“ L. reuteri ”), a biocompatible microsphere, and a water-soluble carbohydrate, thereby treating or alleviating the depression or the anxiety disorder. 
     
     
         63 . The method of  claim 62 , wherein the  L. reuteri  is adhered to the biocompatible microsphere. 
     
     
         64 . The method of  claim 62 , wherein the  L. reuteri  is strain ATCC 23272. 
     
     
         65 . The method of  claim 62 , wherein the water-soluble carbohydrate is selected from the group consisting of maltose, sucrose, and combinations thereof. 
     
     
         66 . The method of  claim 62 , wherein the biocompatible microsphere has a diameter of about 1 micron to about 100 microns. 
     
     
         67 . The method of  claim 62 , wherein the subject also has a gastrointestinal disorder. 
     
     
         68 . The method of  claim 62 , wherein administration comprises an oral administration. 
     
     
         69 . The method of  claim 62 , wherein the composition is administered to provide from about 1×10 7  to about 1×10 9  CFU/ml of  L. reuteri.    
     
     
         70 . The method of  claim 62 , wherein the composition is administered in a single dose. 
     
     
         71 . The method of  claim 62 , wherein the composition is administered in multiple doses.
