System for peritoneal dialysis and extracorporeal blood treatments
Abstract
A dialysis system is disclosed that enables a patient to undergo both peritoneal dialysis and extracorporeal blood treatments. The system includes a base unit and a blood treatment unit configured to perform extracorporeal blood treatments on a patient. The blood treatment unit includes a user interface operable with a controller for displaying a calendar of days in which an extracorporeal blood treatment is scheduled to be performed. The base unit includes a base unit controller that is programmed to receive information indicative whether a peritoneal dialysis treatment or the extracorporeal blood treatment is to be performed. The base unit controller operates first software instructions when the base unit uses a first fluid stored in a fluid container when the peritoneal dialysis treatment is selected or operates second software instructions when the base unit uses a second, different fluid from an online source when the extracorporeal blood treatment is selected.

receiving a selection input indicating the extracorporeal blood treatment is to be performed for a next treatment; and
a base unit operable with the blood treatment unit, the base unit including a base unit controller and a fluid container, the base unit controller programmed to:
receive information indicative whether a peritoneal dialysis treatment or the extracorporeal blood treatment is to be performed, and
(i) operate first software instructions when the base unit uses a first fluid stored in the fluid container when the peritoneal dialysis treatment is selected, or (ii) operate second software instructions when the base unit uses a second, different fluid from an online source when the extracorporeal blood treatment is selected.
2 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the calendar includes indications of past treatments performed including whether the past treatment was the peritoneal dialysis treatment or the extracorporeal blood treatment.
3 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the calendar schedule of the days in which the extracorporeal blood treatment is to be performed is received in the controller of the blood treatment unit from a computer of a doctor or caregiver.
4 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the base unit controller is separate from the controller of the blood treatment unit.
5 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the first fluid is a peritoneal dialysis dialysate and the second fluid is an extracorporeal blood treatment dialysate or a replacement fluid.
6 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the base unit is configured to prepare dialysis fluid for the at least one extracorporeal blood treatment using the second fluid from the online source.
7 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the controller of the blood treatment unit is programmed to control at least one of the following: (i) air in blood detection, (ii) operational speed of the blood pump, (iii) blood line priming, (iv) blood rinseback, (v) blood line access disconnection, or (vi) valves associated with a blood treatment disposable.
8 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the blood treatment unit includes a blood filter that receives the second, different fluid from the base unit for use in the extracorporeal blood treatment.
9 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the base unit controller is programmed to operate with a blood treatment cassette.
10 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the base unit and the blood treatment unit are configured to share data via a wired or wireless connection.
11 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the user interface controls both the base unit and the blood treatment unit.
12 . A system enabling both peritoneal dialysis and extracorporeal blood treatments, the system comprising:
a peritoneal dialysis unit configured to perform at least one peritoneal dialysis treatment on a patient, the peritoneal dialysis unit including
a dialysis fluid pump configured to pump peritoneal dialysis fluid through a patient line to a peritoneal cavity of the patient for a dwell period of a peritoneal dialysis treatment and to remove the peritoneal dialysis fluid from the peritoneal cavity of the patient through the patient line after the dwell period,
a control unit configured to operate the dialysis fluid pump, and
a user interface operable with the control unit for:
displaying a calendar of days in which a peritoneal dialysis treatment is scheduled to be performed, and
receiving a selection input indicating the peritoneal dialysis treatment is to be performed for a next treatment; and
a base unit operable with the peritoneal dialysis unit, the base unit including a base unit controller and a fluid container, the base unit controller programmed to:
receive information indicative whether the peritoneal dialysis treatment or an extracorporeal blood treatment is to be performed, and
(i) operate first software instructions when the base unit uses a first fluid stored in the fluid container when the peritoneal dialysis treatment is selected, or (ii) operate second software instructions when the base unit uses a second, different fluid from an online source when the extracorporeal blood treatment is selected.
13 . The system of claim 12 , further comprising a supply fluid line removably fluidly coupling the base unit to the peritoneal dialysis unit.
14 . The system of claim 13 , wherein the peritoneal dialysis unit operates with a peritoneal cassette that includes:
a pump chamber for operation with the dialysis fluid pump; and a port for fluid connection to the supply fluid line.
15 . The system of claim 12 , wherein the calendar includes indications of past treatments performed including whether the past treatment was the peritoneal dialysis treatment or the extracorporeal blood treatment.
16 . The system of claim 12 , wherein the calendar schedule of the days in which the peritoneal dialysis treatment is to be performed is received in the control unit of the peritoneal dialysis unit from a computer of a doctor or caregiver.
17 . The system of claim 12 , wherein the first fluid is a peritoneal dialysis dialysate and the second fluid is an extracorporeal blood treatment dialysate or a replacement fluid.
18 . The system of claim 12 , wherein the control unit of the peritoneal dialysis unit is further configured to detect that the peritoneal dialysis unit is docked to the base unit by performing a handshake routine.
19 . The system of claim 12 , wherein the base unit and the peritoneal dialysis unit are configured to share data via a wired or wireless connection.
20 . The system of claim 12 , wherein the user interface controls both the base unit and the peritoneal dialysis unit.Join the waitlist — get patent alerts
