Claims

Abstract

A system having a scope with a longitudinal length extending between a proximal end and a distal end includes a plurality of markers spaced along the longitudinal length. The system also includes a disassociation and positioning device that is configured to enhance unsedated transnasal endoscopic procedures by at least partially occluding the vision of a patient while enabling body cavity access, and optionally record and sense body functions such as temperature, heart rate and oxygenation of the blood stream. The system further includes a sensor integrated into the distraction device, wherein the sensor is configured to detect the markers on the longitudinal length of the scope.

What is claimed is: 
     
         1 . A device for use in a surgical procedure, comprising:
 a flexible endoscope having an outer diameter, the flexible endoscope having a biopsy channel extending longitudinally therethrough, the biopsy channel having a working diameter, the flexible endoscope having a tip deflection control lever at a proximal end, the tip deflection control lever configured to control a displacement of a tip of the endoscope in at least four directions,   wherein the difference between the outer diameter of the flexible endoscope and the working diameter of the biopsy channel is 2.0 mm or less.   
     
     
         2 . The device of  claim 1 , wherein the difference between the outer diameter of the flexible endoscope and the working diameter of the biopsy channel is 1.5 mm or less. 
     
     
         3 . The device of  claim 1 , wherein the difference between the outer diameter of the flexible endoscope and the working diameter of the biopsy channel is 1.3 mm or less. 
     
     
         4 . The device of  claim 1 , further comprising:
 steering wires extending within the flexible endoscope between the outer diameter of the flexible endoscope and the working diameter of the biopsy channel.   
     
     
         5 . The device of  claim 4 , wherein the steering wires are configured to be pulled by the tip deflection control lever so as to control a displacement of a tip of the endoscope in the at least four directions. 
     
     
         6 . The device of  claim 1 , wherein the outer diameter of the flexible endoscope is suitable to be insertable trans-nasally into a patient. 
     
     
         7 . The device of  claim 6 , wherein the outer diameter of the flexible endoscope is suitable to be insertable trans-nasally into a pediatric patient. or less. 
     
     
         8 . The device of  claim 1 , wherein the outer diameter of the flexible endoscope is 5 mm 
     
     
         9 . The device of  claim 1 , wherein the outer diameter of the flexible endoscope is 4.5 mm or less. 
     
     
         10 . The device of  claim 1 , wherein the outer diameter of the flexible endoscope is 4.0 mm or less. 
     
     
         11 . The device of  claim 1 , wherein the outer diameter of the flexible endoscope is 3.5 mm or less. 
     
     
         12 . The device of  claim 1 , wherein the working diameter of the biopsy channel is configured to slidingly receive an endoscopic biopsy forceps therethrough. 
     
     
         13 . The device of  claim 1 , wherein the working diameter of the biopsy channel is 3.0 mm or greater. 
     
     
         14 . The device of  claim 1 , wherein the working diameter of the biopsy channel is 2.0 mm or greater. 
     
     
         15 . The device of  claim 1 , wherein the working diameter of the biopsy channel is 1.3 mm or greater. 
     
     
         16 . The device of  claim 1 , wherein the tip deflection control lever allows for single hand manipulation and steering. 
     
     
         17 . The device of  claim 1 , wherein the tip deflection control lever includes one of a joystick or a roller ball. 
     
     
         18 . The device of  claim 1 , wherein the tip deflection control lever provides for at least 90 degrees of deflection in all four directions. 
     
     
         19 . The device of  claim 18 , wherein the tip deflection control lever provides for at 90 degrees of deflection in three directions and greater than 90 degrees of deflection in a fourth direction. 
     
     
         20 . The device of  claim 1 , wherein the proximal end of the flexible endoscope also includes a hand control to operate air and/or water suction. 
     
     
         21 . The device of  claim 1 , wherein the proximal end of the flexible endoscope also includes a button to actuate photo or video capabilities. 
     
     
         22 . The device of  claim 1 , wherein the proximal end of the flexible endoscope also includes a line to an imaging system.
