Abstract

The application describes treatment of hepatic encephalopathy using gastrointestinal specific antibiotics. One example of a gastrointestinal specific antibiotic is rifaximin.

         97 . A method of reducing a cirrhosis subject's risk of experiencing a breakthrough overt hepatic encephalopathy (HE) episode, comprising administering to the cirrhosis subject 550 mg of rifaximin. 
     
     
         98 . The method of  claim 97 , further comprising administering lactulose. 
     
     
         99 . The method of  claim 97 , wherein the subject has a Model for End-Stage Liver Disease (MELD) level between 1 and 24. 
     
     
         100 . The method of  claim 97 , wherein the subject has a Model for End-Stage Liver Disease (MELD) level less than or equal to ten. 
     
     
         101 . The method of  claim 97 , wherein the subject has a Model for End-Stage Liver Disease (MELD) level between 11 and 18. 
     
     
         102 . The method of  claim 97 , wherein the subject has a Model for End-Stage Liver Disease (MELD) level between 19 and 24. 
     
     
         103 . The method of  claim 97 , wherein the subject has a Conn score of 0 or 1. 
     
     
         104 . The method of  claim 97 , wherein the subject is administered 550 mg of rifaximin two times per day (BID).
