Application tune manifests and tune state recovery

Abstract

In accordance with one or more aspects, a request to run an application is received. The application has an associated tune manifest that identifies one or more resources that the application may use. The tune manifest is compared to a device resource record, and a check is made, based at least in part on the comparing, whether the one or more resources identified in the tune manifest can be satisfied by the device. If the one or more resources identified in the tune manifest can be satisfied by the device, then the application is run; otherwise, a notification of a conflict between the application and the device is presented. Additionally, when the application exits, a device tune state that identifies a content source to which the device was tuned prior to running the application can be retrieved and the device restored to this device tune state.

         21 . A method comprising:
 receiving a request to run an application on a device while media content is being streamed;   comparing a resource requirement of the application to an available resource of the device;   determining whether the resource requirement is satisfied by the available resource;   in response to determining the resource requirement is satisfied by the available resource:
 executing a control affecting the streaming of the media content item; and 
 running the application. 
   
     
     
         22 . The method of  claim 21 , comprising:
 in response to receiving an indication that the application is exited, restoring the device to a previous streaming state.   
     
     
         23 . The method of  claim 22 , wherein the control affecting the streaming of the media content item is a pause command, and wherein the previous streaming state includes resuming streaming of the media content. 
     
     
         24 . The method of  claim 22 , wherein the control affecting the streaming of the media content item is a restriction of a bit rate, and wherein the previous streaming state includes resuming streaming of the media content at an unrestricted bit rate. 
     
     
         25 . The method of  claim 21 , comprising:
 in response to determining a conflict between the resource application and the available resource, generating for display a notification of the conflict.   
     
     
         26 . The method of  claim 25 , comprising:
 generating a query for display as part of the notification of the conflict, wherein the query identifies a nature of the conflict and how to resolve the conflict.   
     
     
         27 . The method of  claim 21 , wherein the resource requirement is at least one of a hardware resource, a bandwidth capacity of a network to which the device is coupled, a number of windows that are concurrently displayable, a number of concurrently streaming content sources, or a number of concurrently running applications. 
     
     
         28 . The method of  claim 21 , wherein the resource requirement is a bandwidth capacity of a home network to which the device is coupled. 
     
     
         29 . The method of  claim 21 , comprising:
 communicating between the device and a content distributor streaming the media content.   
     
     
         30 . The method of  claim 21 , comprising:
 communicating between the device and a content distributor streaming the media content;   in response to determining a conflict between the resource application and the available resource, generating for display a notification of the conflict; and   in response to receiving an indication that the application is exited, restoring the device to a previous streaming state,   wherein the control affecting the streaming of the media content item is a pause command, and wherein the previous streaming state includes resuming streaming of the media content.   
     
     
         31 . A system comprising:
 circuitry configured to:
 receive a request to run an application on a device while media content is being streamed; 
 compare a resource requirement of the application to an available resource of the device; 
 determine whether the resource requirement is satisfied by the available resource; 
 in response to determining the resource requirement is satisfied by the available resource:
 execute a control affecting the streaming of the media content item; and 
 run the application. 
 
   
     
     
         32 . The system of  claim 31 , wherein the circuitry is configured to:
 in response to receiving an indication that the application is exited, restore the device to a previous streaming state.   
     
     
         33 . The system of  claim 32 , wherein the control affecting the streaming of the media content item is a pause command, and wherein the previous streaming state includes resuming streaming of the media content. 
     
     
         34 . The system of  claim 32 , wherein the control affecting the streaming of the media content item is a restriction of a bit rate, and wherein the previous streaming state includes resuming streaming of the media content at an unrestricted bit rate. 
     
     
         35 . The system of  claim 31 , wherein the circuitry is configured to:
 in response to determining a conflict between the resource application and the available resource, generate for display a notification of the conflict.   
     
     
         36 . The system of  claim 35 , wherein the circuitry is configured to:
 generate a query for display as part of the notification of the conflict, wherein the query identifies a nature of the conflict and how to resolve the conflict.   
     
     
         37 . The system of  claim 31 , wherein the resource requirement is at least one of a hardware resource, a bandwidth capacity of a network to which the device is coupled, a number of windows that are concurrently displayable, a number of concurrently streaming content sources, or a number of concurrently running applications.

 communicate between the device and a content distributor streaming the media content;   in response to determining a conflict between the resource application and the available resource, generate for display a notification of the conflict; and   in response to receiving an indication that the application is exited, restore the device to a previous streaming state,   wherein the control affecting the streaming of the media content item is a pause command, and wherein the previous streaming state includes resuming streaming of the media content.
