Abstract

Provided herein are methods of detecting or determining aging and/or oxidative damage in tissue, including placental tissue, skin, kidney and brain tissue. One embodiment provides a method for detecting or determining aging in body tissue, comprising measuring one or more markers of aldehyde oxidase 1 (AOX1) expression or activity in a biological sample, wherein the level of AOX1 expression or activity, or of the one or more markers, is indicative of aging in the tissue. Also provided herein are methods of treating a disease or condition associated with ageing or oxidative damage in one or more cells or tissues, comprising administering to a subject in need thereof an inhibitor of AOX1.

Claims

exact text as granted — not AI-modified
What is claimed is:

1 . A method of treating a disease or condition associated with ageing or oxidative damage in one or more cells or tissues, the method comprising administering to a subject in need thereof an inhibitor of aldehyde oxidase 1 (AOX1).

2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the one or more cells or tissues comprise skin, placental, kidney or brain cells or tissue.

3 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the disease or condition is associated with ageing of the skin or oxidative damage to the skin.

         4 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the inhibitor of AOX1 is raloxifene or a G protein-coupled estrogen receptor 1 (GPER1) agonist.

         5 . The method of claim 4 , wherein the GPER1 agonist is G-1.

6 . The method of claim 1 , comprising topically administering a composition comprising the inhibitor.

7 . The method of claim 1 , comprising administering a composition comprising the inhibitor in the form of a liniment, gel, cream, ointment, foam or oil.

8 . A method of slowing ageing or oxidative damage in one or more cells or tissues, the method comprising exposing the one or more cells or tissues to an inhibitor of AOX1.

9 . The method of claim 8 , wherein the one or more cells or tissues comprise skin, placental, kidney or brain cells or tissue.

10 . The method of claim 9 , wherein the one or more cells or tissues comprise skin cells or tissue.

         11 . The method of claim 8 , wherein the inhibitor of AOX1 is raloxifene or a G protein-coupled estrogen receptor 1 (GPER1) agonist.

         12 . The method of claim 11 , wherein the GPER1 agonist is G-1.

13 . The method of claim 8 , comprising topically administering a composition comprising the inhibitor to a subject in need thereof.

14 . The method of claim 8 , comprising administering to a subject in need thereof a composition comprising the inhibitor in the form of a liniment, gel, cream, ointment, foam or oil.

15 . A method for preventing or reducing the risk of post-dated pregnancy or stillbirth, the method comprising administering to a pregnant subject an inhibitor of AOX1.
