Abstract

Disclosed herein are system, method, and computer program product embodiments for a computing system with a content-characteristic based trigger feature. An embodiment operates by determining a hybrid system of transmitting a fingerprint of media is being used to transmit one or more media fingerprints. A first fingerprint is generated from a first portion of media content and a second fingerprint is generated from of a second portion of the media content. It is determined that the first portion of media content and the second portion of the media content lack a threshold extent of similarity with each other. The second fingerprint is provided to a content identification server to identify the second portion of the media content. An action is performed based on an identified second portion of the media content.

What is claimed is:

         1 . A method comprising:
 determining a hybrid system of transmitting a fingerprint of media is being used to transmit one or more media fingerprints, wherein the hybrid system comprises both a time-based trigger and a user interaction trigger, wherein upon a detection of the user interaction trigger the one or more media fingerprints are transmitted, and wherein upon an expiration of a period of time for the time-based trigger, the following operations are performed:
 generating, by a computing system, a first fingerprint of a first portion of media content and a second fingerprint of a second portion of the media content, wherein the first fingerprint is different from the second fingerprint;
 determining, by a trained classifier of the computing system, that the first portion of media content and the second portion of the media content lack a threshold extent of similarity with each other, wherein the trained classifier is trained by providing as input to the trained classifier, training media content that includes fingerprints associated with respective first portions and second portions, and respective indications of whether the respective first portions and second portions lack the threshold extent of similarity;
 responsive to determining the first portion and the second portion lack the threshold extent of similarity with each other, transmitting, by the computing system, a fingerprint associated with the second portion of the media content to a content identification server to identify the second portion of the media content; and
   performing an action based on an identified second portion of the media content.
