Shingle sealing arrangements
Abstract
An exemplary shingle includes at least one coated shingle sheet defining a headlap portion and a tab portion each having opposed upper and lower surfaces. A first line of adhesive is adhered to one of the upper surface of the headlap portion and the lower surface of the tab portion, and includes a first thermally activated adhesive material. A second line of adhesive is adhered to one of the upper surface of the headlap portion and the lower surface of the tab portion, and includes a second thermally activated adhesive material having a minimum activation temperature less than a minimum activation temperature of the first thermally activated adhesive material.

1 . A laminated shingle comprising:
an overlay sheet; an underlay sheet; and a sealant; wherein the overlay sheet comprises a headlap portion and a tab portion; wherein the underlay sheet is adhered to a lower surface of the tab portion of the overlay sheet; wherein the sealant is disposed on a lower surface of the underlay sheet proximate a front edge of the laminated shingle; and wherein the headlap portion of the overlay sheet comprises an area of reduced thickness that is proximate a rear edge of the laminated shingle.
2 . The laminated shingle according to claim 1 , further comprising a layer of granules disposed on an upper surface of the overlay sheet, wherein a plurality of first granules in the layer of granules are smaller than a plurality of second granules in the layer of granules; wherein the first granules are disposed in the area of reduced thickness; and wherein the second granules are disposed outside of the area of reduced thickness.
3 . The laminated shingle according to claim 2 , wherein first granules are at least 50% smaller than the second granules.
4 . The laminated shingle according to claim 2 , wherein the first granules are at least 75% smaller than the second granules.
5 . The laminated shingle according to claim 2 , wherein the first granules comprise at least one of sand, talc, mica, calcium carbonate, and ground recycled glass.
6 . The laminated shingle according to claim 5 , wherein the second granules comprise ceramic roofing grade granules.
7 . The laminated shingle according to claim 2 , further comprising a layer of backdust, wherein the layer of backdust is disposed on a lower surface of the laminated shingle; and wherein the first granules are the same material as the backdust layer.
8 . The laminated shingle according to claim 1 , wherein the overlay sheet comprises a substrate that is coated with asphalt; and wherein the area of reduced thickness comprises a smaller thickness of the asphalt relative to a remainder of the overlay sheet.
9 . The laminated shingle according to claim 1 , further comprising a release layer, wherein the release layer is disposed on a lower surface of the headlap portion of the overlay sheet; and wherein the release layer overlaps with the area of reduced thickness.
10 . The laminated shingle according to claim 1 , wherein the overlay sheet comprises a substrate that is coated with asphalt;
wherein the area of reduced thickness comprises a smaller thickness of the asphalt relative to a remainder of the overlay sheet; wherein the laminated shingle further comprises a layer of granules disposed on an upper surface of the overlay sheet, wherein a plurality of first granules in the layer of granules are smaller than a plurality of second granules in the layer of granules; wherein the first granules are disposed in the area of reduced thickness; and wherein the second granules are disposed outside of the area of reduced thickness.
11 . A package comprising:
two or more shingles in a stacked configuration, each of the two or more shingles comprising:
an overlay sheet;
an underlay sheet; and
a sealant;
wherein the overlay sheet comprises a headlap portion and a tab portion;
wherein the underlay sheet is adhered to a lower surface of the tab portion of the overlay sheet;
wherein the sealant is disposed on a lower surface of the underlay sheet proximate a front edge of the laminated shingle;
wherein the headlap portion of the overlay sheet comprises an area of reduced thickness that is proximate a rear edge of the laminated shingle; and wherein the sealant of a first shingle of the two or more shingles engages the area of reduced thickness of a second shingle of the two or more shingles when the two or more shingles are in a stacked configuration.
12 . The package according to claim 11 , wherein each of the two or more shingles comprises a layer of granules disposed on an upper surface of the overlay sheet, wherein a plurality of first granules in the layer of granules are smaller than a plurality of second granules in the layer of granules; wherein the first granules are disposed in the area of reduced thickness; and wherein the second granules are disposed outside of the area of reduced thickness.
13 . The package according to claim 12 , wherein first granules are at least 50% smaller than the second granules.
14 . The package according to claim 12 , wherein the first granules are at least 75% smaller than the second granules.
15 . The package according to claim 12 , wherein the first granules comprise at least one of sand, talc, mica, calcium carbonate, and ground recycled glass.
16 . The package according to claim 15 , wherein the second granules comprise ceramic roofing grade granules.
17 . The package according to claim 12 , wherein each of the two or more shingles comprises a layer of backdust, wherein the layer of backdust is disposed on a lower surface of the laminated shingle; and wherein the first granules are the same material as the backdust layer.
18 . The package according to claim 11 , wherein the overlay sheet comprises a substrate that is coated with asphalt; and wherein the area of reduced thickness comprises a smaller thickness of the asphalt relative to a remainder of the overlay sheet.
19 . The package according to claim 11 , wherein each of the two or more shingles comprises a release layer, wherein the release layer is disposed on a lower surface of the headlap portion of the overlay sheet; and wherein the release layer overlaps with the area of reduced thickness.
