Novel iron compositions and methods of making and using the same

Abstract

The present invention involves a novel aqueous iron composition. The aqueous iron composition includes iron sucrose and bicarbonate. The aqueous iron composition of the invention exhibits enhanced renal protective effects relative to conventional iron sucrose compositions.

         30 . An aqueous pharmaceutical composition comprising:
 iron sucrose;   bicarbonate;   tin protoporphyrin; and   a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier.   
     
     
         31 . The composition of  claim 30 , wherein the pharmaceutical acceptable carrier is water. 
     
     
         32 . The composition of  claim 30 , wherein the pharmaceutical acceptable carrier comprises phosphate buffered saline. 
     
     
         33 . The composition of  claim 30 , further comprising both iron (II) and iron (Ill). 
     
     
         34 . A method of administering the aqueous pharmaceutical composition of  claim 30  comprising administering the aqueous pharmaceutical composition by intravenous injection to a patient in need thereof. 
     
     
         35 . The method of  claim 34 , wherein the patient is suffering from chronic kidney disease. 
     
     
         36 . The method of  claim 34 , wherein the patient is undergoing an organ transplantation.
