Abstract
This invention relates generally to an emollient topical composition of matter that contains molecular iodine with a reduced effective vapor pressure. In specific embodiments, the composition reduces the loss of molecular iodine to the atmosphere under storage conditions after application to mammalian tissue.
Claims
exact text as granted — not AI-modified1 . A composition comprising an organic carrier molecule and molecular iodine, and the vapor pressure of molecular iodine in the composition being at least two magnitudes lower than the vapor pressure of molecular iodine in water.
. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the organic carrier molecule is propylene glycol, glycerol or a combination thereof.
. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the concentration of molecular iodine is between about 10 ppm and about 1000 ppm.
. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the ratio of molecular iodine to all iodine species is at least about 70%.
. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the ratio of molecular iodine to all iodine species is at least about 90%.
- 9 . (canceled)
. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the composition further comprises one or more organic molecules.
. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the organic molecule is selected from monomethyl ether, acetate, amyl alcohol, ethyl acetate, butyl acetate, 1-propanol and 2-propanol, dimethyl sulfoxide, iso-propanol, and ethanol.
. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the composition is packaged in a single compartment container.
- 14 . (canceled)
. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the composition is packaged in a package that contains an integrated applicator such that said composition impregnates said applicator wherein said applicator is designed to allow facile application of said emollient composition to mammalian tissues such as the interior surfaces of a human nose.
- 20 . (canceled)
. The composition of claim 1 , further comprising a saturated fatty acid selected from the group including includes lactic acid, myristic acid, 1-monolaurin, dodeconic acid and caprylic acid.
. The composition of claim 1 formulated for dermal application.
. The composition of claim 22 , wherein the dermal application is epicutaneous.
. The composition of claim 23 , wherein the dermal application is a cream, foam, gel, lotion or ointment dosage form.
. The composition of claim 23 , wherein the dermal application is in the form of a hand sanitizer.
. The composition of claim 1 formulated for nasal application.
. The composition of claim 26 , wherein the nasal application is a spray dosage form.
. The composition of claim 27 , wherein the spray dosage form is in the form of a metered dose inhaler.
. (canceled)
. A method for treating a bacterial infection comprising administering a therapeutically effective amount of the composition of claim 1 .
. A method for treating or preventing a hospital acquired infection comprising administering an effective amount of the composition of claim 1 .
. The method of claim 31 , wherein the hospital acquired infection is Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Acinetobacter baumannii and Enterobacteriaceae including E. coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Shigella or Yersinia.Join the waitlist — get patent alerts
