Abstract

A medical system comprising a first medical device, a second medical device, and a computer. The first medical device is configured to be placed beneath the dermis. The first medical device comprises an enclosure comprising non-electrically conductive material. A cap couples to the enclosure and is configured to seal the enclosure. The enclosure houses electronic circuitry configured to measure one or more parameter or provide a therapy. The cap couples to the ground of the electronic circuitry. The first medical device includes a dual band antenna. A first antenna is configured to operate within a first frequency band below 1 gigahertz. The second antenna is configured to operate at a frequency above 1 gigahertz. The second medical device is configured to transmit a radio frequency signal to the first medical device. The first medical device is configured to harvest the energy received from the radio frequency signal to enable the electronic circuitry and perform at least one task.

         21 . A medical system comprising:
 a first medical device, comprising:
 a plate configured to couple to a musculoskeletal system, including: a first electronic circuitry; and a strain gauge coupled to the first electronic circuitry, wherein the strain gauge is configured to measure strain applied to the plate; and 
 at least one screw configured to couple the plate to a bone. 
   
     
     
         22 . The medical system of  claim 21 , wherein the plate further includes:
 a first antenna, wherein the first electronic circuitry is configured to harvest energy received by the first antenna, and wherein the energy harvested by the first electronic circuitry enables operation of the first electronic circuitry to perform at least one task.   
     
     
         23 . The medical system of  claim 22 , wherein the at least one task comprises transmitting strain measurements from the strain gauge. 
     
     
         24 . The medical system of  claim 21 , wherein the plate further comprises:
 one or more therapy devices coupled to the first electronic circuitry, wherein the one or more therapy devices are configured to deliver therapy to the musculoskeletal system.   
     
     
         25 . The medical system of  claim 24 , wherein the one or more therapy devices comprise at least one of:
 a transducer configured to deliver ultrasonic signals; or   a light source configured to deliver light.   
     
     
         26 . The medical system of  claim 21 , wherein the screw comprises a second electronic circuitry and a pressure sensor configured to measure pressure applied to the screw. 
     
     
         27 . The medical system of  claim 26 , wherein the second electronic circuitry is configured to transmit pressure measurements from the pressure sensor. 
     
     
         28 . The medical system of  claim 26 , wherein the second electronic circuitry is powered by energy harvested from radio frequency signals. 
     
     
         29 . The medical system of  claim 22 , wherein the first antenna of the plate is a dual band antenna and comprises a first intermediate antenna and a second intermediate antenna. 
     
     
         30 . The medical system of  claim 29 , wherein the first intermediate antenna operates at a first frequency band and the second intermediate antenna operates at a second frequency band. 
     
     
         31 . A medical system comprising:
 a plate configured to couple to a bone, the plate including:
 electronic circuitry; and 
 a strain gauge coupled to the electronic circuitry, the strain gauge configured to measure strain applied to the plate, wherein the electronic circuitry is configured to transmit strain measurements from the strain gauge. 
   
     
     
         32 . The system of  claim 31 , wherein the plate further comprises one or more therapy devices coupled to the electronic circuitry and configured to deliver therapy to a portion of a musculoskeletal system. 
     
     
         33 . The system of  claim 32 , wherein the one or more therapy devices comprise at least one of: a transducer configured to deliver ultrasonic signals and/or a light source configured to deliver light. 
     
     
         34 . The system of  claim 31 , wherein the plate further comprises a force sensor coupled to the electronic circuitry, the force sensor configured to measure force applied to the plate. 
     
     
         35 . The system of  claim 31 , further comprising:
 a screw configured to couple the plate to the bone, the screw comprising:
 a screw head; 
 a threaded screw body extending from the screw head; and 
 a pressure sensor configured to measure pressure applied to the screw. 
   
     
     
         36 . The system of  claim 35 , wherein the screw further comprises electronic circuitry configured to transmit pressure measurements from the pressure sensor. 
     
     
         37 . The system of  claim 36 , wherein the electronic circuitry of the screw is powered by energy harvested from radio frequency signals. 
     
     
         38 . The system of  claim 31 , wherein the electronic circuitry of the plate comprises a dual band antenna configured to harvest energy from radio frequency signals. 
     
     
         39 . The system of  claim 38 , wherein the dual band antenna comprises (i) a first antenna configured to operate at a first frequency band and (ii) a second antenna configured to operate at a second frequency band, wherein the first frequency band is different from the second frequency band. 
     
     
         40 . A medical system comprising:
 a plate configured to couple to a bone, the plate including:
 electronic circuitry within the plate; 
 a strain gauge coupled to the electronic circuitry on a first side of the plate,
 the strain gauge configured to measure strain applied to the plate; and 
 
 one or more therapy devices coupled to the electronic circuitry on a second side of the plate and configured to deliver ultrasound signals for therapy.
