Abstract
A method of augmenting or reconstructing a breast of a patient includes providing an implantable member and implanting the implantable member. The implantable member includes an exterior surface defined by an anterior face and a posterior face, wherein one of the anterior face and the posterior face includes at least one fixation region defined by a texture, roughness or sheen different from a respective texture, roughness or sheen of a balance of said one of the anterior face and posterior face. The implantable member is implanted into a breast of a patient such that the fixation region of the implantable member generally aligns with the pectoralis major muscle group or the pectoralis minor muscle group.

1 . A method of augmenting or reconstructing a breast of a patient, the method comprising:
providing an implantable member including an exterior surface defined by a textured posterior face and a relatively less textured anterior face that are both integrally molded into the exterior surface, wherein roughnesses of the textured posterior face and the textured anterior face permit enhanced tissue ingrowth or adhesion along the exterior surface; and implanting the implantable member into a breast of a patient such that the implantable member is positioned over the top of the pectoralis major muscle group or underneath the pectoralis major muscle group.
2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the exterior surface of the implantable member is in contact with the pectoralis major muscle group or the pectoralis minor muscle group.
3 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the exterior surface of the implantable member includes at least one fixation region.
4 . The method of claim 3 , further comprising substantially aligning the fixation region with the pectoralis major muscle group.
5 . The method of claim 3 , further comprising substantially aligning the fixation region with the pectoralis minor muscle group.
6 . The method of claim 3 , wherein the at least one fixation region is defined by an enhanced texture relative to one of the anterior face and posterior face.
7 . The method of claim 3 , wherein the fixation region comprises an elongated configuration, and the implanting comprises aligning the elongated configuration of the fixation region with the pectoralis major muscle group or the pectoralis minor muscle group.
8 . The method of claim 3 , wherein the fixation region comprises a band shape.
9 . A method of augmenting or reconstructing a breast of a patient, the method comprising:
providing an implantable member including an exterior surface defined by a textured posterior face and a relatively less textured anterior face that are both integrally molded into the exterior surface, wherein roughnesses of the textured posterior face and the textured anterior face permit enhanced tissue ingrowth or adhesion along the exterior surface; and implanting the implantable member into a breast of a patient, wherein the textured posterior face and the textured anterior face are configured to disrupt capsule formation.
10 . The method of claim 9 , further comprising positioning the implantable member over the top of the pectoralis major muscle group.
11 . The method of claim 9 , further comprising positioning the implantable member underneath the pectoralis major muscle group.
12 . The method of claim 9 , wherein one of the anterior face and the posterior face includes at least one fixation region defined by a texture, roughness or sheen different from a respective texture, roughness or sheen of a balance of said one of the anterior face and posterior face.
13 . The method of claim 12 , further comprising substantially aligning the fixation region with the pectoralis major muscle group or the pectoralis minor muscle group.
14 . A breast prosthesis for implantation in a human being, the prosthesis comprising:
an implantable member comprising an elastomeric shell including an exterior surface defined by an anterior face and a posterior face; a first region defined by a first surface finish integrally molded into the anterior face of the shell; and a second region defined by a second surface finish integrally molded into the posterior face of the shell, the second surface finish having a greater roughness than the first surface finish.
15 . A breast prosthesis of claim 14 , wherein the first surface finish comprises a distribution of pores, crevices or caverns.
16 . The breast prosthesis of claim 14 , wherein the first surface finish extends along an entirety of the anterior face of the shell.
17 . The breast prosthesis of claim 14 , wherein the second surface finish comprises a distribution of pores, crevices or caverns configured to encourage a greater degree of tissue interaction and adhesion than that of the first surface finish.
18 . The breast prosthesis of claim 14 , wherein the second surface finish extends along an entirety of the posterior face of the shell.
