Abstract

A golf ball comprising:(a) a core;(b) at least one mantle layer adjacent to the core;(c) an inner cover layer adjacent to the mantle layer; and(d) an outer cover layer adjacent to the inner cover layer,wherein the inner cover layer has a material Shore D hardness that is at least 3 less than the material Shore D hardness of the outer cover layer, and the inner cover layer has a thickness of less than 0.050 in.

What is claimed is: 
     
         1 . A golf ball comprising:
 (a) a core;   (b) at least one mantle layer adjacent to the core;   (c) an inner cover layer adjacent to the mantle layer; and   (d) an outer cover layer adjacent to the inner cover layer,   wherein the inner cover layer has a material Shore D hardness that is at least 3 units less than the material Shore D hardness of the outer cover layer, and the inner cover layer has a thickness of less than or equal to 0.050 in.   
     
     
         2 . A four-piece golf ball comprising:
 (a) a core;   (b) a mantle layer adjacent to the core having a material Shore D hardness of 45 to 75 and a thickness of 0.035 to 0.080 in.;   (c) an inner cover layer adjacent to the mantle layer having a material Shore D hardness of 10 to 65 and a thickness of 0.005 to 0.025 in.; and   (d) an outer cover layer adjacent to the inner cover layer having a material Shore D hardness of 30 to 70 and a thickness of 0.025 to 0.065 in.
