Abstract

A modular furniture system divides the sofa into modules that can be combined with a modular coffee table at will to achieve the desired furniture configuration. The sofa modules have foldable armrests and there are storage spaces under both the sofa modules and the modular coffee table. The modules can be put together using connectors to make a sofa bed. The modular coffee table can also be taken out separately to form a double sofa and coffee table, or the coffee table can be expanded to become an ottoman. Each of the sofa modules can be taken out separately and used as an armchair.

Claims

exact text as granted — not AI-modified
What is claimed is:

         1 . A modular furniture system comprising:
 at least one sofa module, the at least one sofa module comprising:
 a back member pivotably attached to a base portion;
 a base cushion disposed on the base portion;
 a back cushion disposed on the back member;
 arm members movable from each side of the base cushion between a collapsed configuration, with the arm members generally flush with the base cushion, and an expanded configuration, with the arm members above a top surface of the base cushion;
 legs pivotably attached to the back member; and
 a slide mechanism permitting the back cushion to slide linearly along the back member, wherein
 the back member is movable between an upright position, where the sofa module is in a chair configuration, and a lowered position, where the back member extends generally parallel with the top surface of the base cushion, the legs contact a floor surface, and the back cushion is generally coplanar with the base cushion.

         2 . The modular furniture system of claim 1 , further comprising one or more slots formed on a back side of the back cushion, the one or more slots receiving one or more protrusions extending from the base member, wherein the base cushion is operable to slide along the back member with the one or more protrusions moving in the one or more slots.

         3 . The modular furniture system of claim 1 , wherein the slide mechanism includes a rail formed in the back member and a protrusion formed in back cushion, the protrusion riding along the rail.

         4 . The modular furniture system of claim 3 , wherein the rail is formed in an elongated U-shape, wherein legs of the elongated U-shape provide a locking mechanism to secure the back member into either the upright position or the lowered position.

         5 . The modular furniture system of claim 1 , further comprising a storage drawer extending from the base member.

         6 . The modular furniture system of claim 1 , further comprising a locking tab accessible through an opening of the base portion, the locking tab moving a locking plate, the locking plate securing the back member in the upright position, wherein moving the locking tab releases the locking plate to permit the back member to be moved into the lowered position.

         7 . The modular furniture system of claim 1 , wherein two or more of the sofa modules are connectable together to convert each individual sofa module from an armchair configuration, into a sofa configuration.

         8 . The modular furniture system of claim 7 , wherein at least one of a front or a bottom of each of the two or more sofa modules include slots formed along a side edge thereof, where in a connector extends from a first slot in a first one of the two or more sofa modules to a second corresponding slot in a second one of the two or more sofa modules, wherein the connector physically attached the first one to the second one.

         9 . A modular furniture system comprising:
 at least one coffee table module, the coffee table module comprising:
 a top member having a top surface and a first cushion positioned under the top surface;
 a base portion having a second cushion positioned atop thereof; and
 a leg system extendable from a channel formed in the base portion, the leg system disposed completely within the base portion when the coffee table module is in a coffee table configuration, wherein
 when the leg system is extended outward from the channel, the top member can be turned upside down and placed with the top surface positioned on top of the leg system to form an ottoman configuration; and
 the first cushion having a top surface that is generally coplanar with a top surface of the second cushion when the coffee table module is in the ottoman configuration.

         10 . The modular furniture system of claim 9 , wherein the first cushion is attached to the second cushion along mating edges thereof when the coffee table module is in the coffee table configuration.

         11 . The modular furniture system of claim 9 , further comprising one or more lock arms, each of the one or more lock arms pivotable between a position interconnecting the base portion to the top surface, and a position spanning alongside the base portion.

         12 . The modular furniture system of claim 11 , further comprising a lock release operable to permit pivoting of the one or more lock arms.

         13 . The modular furniture system of claim 9 , further comprising a storage drawer extendable from the base portion.

         14 . The modular furniture system of claim 13 , wherein the storage drawer extends outward from the base portion from a side of the base portion opposite the channel from which the leg system extends.

         15 . The modular furniture system of claim 14 , wherein the storage drawer nests with the leg system within the base portion when the coffee table module is in the coffee table configuration.

         16 . A modular furniture system comprising:
 at least one sofa module, the at least one sofa module comprising:
 a back member pivotably attached to a sofa base portion;
 a base cushion disposed on the sofa base portion;
 a back cushion disposed on the back member;
 arm members movable from each side of the base cushion between a collapsed configuration, with the arm members generally flush with the base cushion, and an expanded configuration, with the arm members above a top surface of the base cushion;
 legs pivotably attached to the back member; and
 a slide mechanism permitting the back cushion to slide linearly along the back member, wherein
 the back member is movable between an upright position, where the sofa module is in a chair configuration, and a lowered position, where the back member extends generally parallel with the top surface of the base cushion, the legs contact a floor surface, and the back cushion is generally coplanar with the base cushion; and
   at least one coffee table module, the coffee table module comprising:
 a top member having a top surface and a first cushion positioned under the top surface;
 a coffee table base portion having a second cushion positioned atop thereof; and
 a leg system extendable from a channel formed in the coffee table base portion, the leg system disposed completely within the coffee table base portion
