Abstract

Some embodiments may include a firearm or a firearm retrofit assembly including a compensation system to reduce recoil, the compensation system operable with a barrel that includes 1) a muzzle and 2) at least one egress in a length of the barrel, the compensation system to redirect gas expelled from the at least one egress in the length of the barrel. Other embodiments may be disclosed and/or claimed.

Claims

1 . An apparatus comprising:
 a barrel that includes 1) a muzzle and 2) one or more egresses in a length of the barrel; and   a gas port device to mount to a front section of the length of the barrel to reduce recoil, the gas port device to fit around the barrel and redirect gas expelled from the one or more egresses, wherein an exterior of the front section is non-threaded and the gas port device is not a slide;   wherein the gas port device includes:
 one or more cavities to expel the redirected gas; and 
 a body defining an attachment interface, wherein at least part of the attachment interface is located forwardly with respect to 1) a back of a cavity, of the one or more cavities, that is closest to a barrel end opposite the muzzle, or 2) a back of an egress, of the one or more egresses, that is closest to the barrel end opposite the muzzle. 
   
     
     
         2 . The apparatus of  claim 1 , the one or more egresses having a first and second bottom exterior edges on different sides of a bore axis of a bore of the barrel, the gas port device further including:
 first and second surfaces to redirect at least some of the gas expelled from the egress, the first and second surfaces positioned so that:
 a first vector extending from the bore axis to the first bottom exterior edge of the one or more egresses collides with the first surface; and 
 a second vector extending from the bore axis to the second different bottom exterior edge of an egress of the one or more egresses collides with the second surface; 
 the first and second vectors along a plane that is perpendicular to the bore axis. 
   
     
     
         3 . The apparatus of  claim 2 , wherein each surface comprises at least one wall, wherein lengths of each of the at least one wall from its bottom to its top are not less than a depth of the one or more cavities, wherein the depth of the one or more cavities is measured along a latitudinal axis that is perpendicular with a bore axis of the barrel. 
     
     
         4 . The apparatus of  claim 1 , wherein said at least part of the attachment interface is also located rearwardly with respect to 1) a front of a cavity, of the one or more cavities, that is closest to the muzzle, or 2) a front of an egress, of the one or more egresses, that is closest to the muzzle. 
     
     
         5 . The apparatus of  claim 1 , wherein an interior of a bore of the barrel is at least partially rifled, and:
 wherein the interior of the bore is smooth, without rifling, extending from the muzzle to a location substantially coinciding with the back of the egress, of the one or more egresses, that is closest to the barrel end opposite the muzzle, the location defined by an intersection of a plane and the interior of the bore, the plane perpendicular to a bore axis of the barrel; and   the interior of the bore includes rifling rearwardly of the smooth interior.   
     
     
         6 . An apparatus, comprising:
 a barrel that includes 1) a muzzle and 2) at least one egress in a length of the barrel, the at least one egress having at least first and second bottom exterior edges; and   a gas port device to mount to a front section of the length of the barrel to reduce recoil, the gas port device to fit around the barrel and redirect gas expelled from the at least one egress, wherein the gas port device is not a slide;   the gas port device having at least one cavity to expel the redirected gas, and including:
 first and second surfaces to redirect at least some of the expelled gas, the first and second surfaces positioned so that:
 a first vector extending from a bore axis to the first bottom exterior edge collides with the first surface; and 
 a second vector extending from the bore axis to the second bottom exterior edge collides with the surface; 
 the first and second vectors along a plane that is perpendicular to the bore axis. 
 
   
     
     
         7 . The apparatus of  claim 6 , wherein an interior of a bore of the barrel is at least partially rifled, and:
 wherein the interior of the bore is smooth, without rifling, extending from the muzzle to a location rearward of a back of the at least one egress, the location defined by an intersection of a plane and the interior of the bore, the plane perpendicular to a bore axis of the barrel; and   the interior of the bore includes rifling rearwardly of the smooth interior.   
     
     
         8 . The apparatus of  claim 6 , wherein each of the surfaces comprises at least one wall, lengths of the at least one wall from its to its tops are not less than a depth of the at least one cavity, wherein the depth of the at least one cavity is measured along a latitudinal axis that is perpendicular with a bore axis of the barrel. 
     
     
         9 . The apparatus of  claim 6 , wherein the gas port device further comprises:
 an additional cavity to redirect some of gas expelled from the muzzle; and   first and second additional surfaces to redirect some of the gas expelled from the muzzle, the first and second additional surfaces positioned so that:
 a third vector in front of, and parallel with, the first vector collides with the first additional surface; and 
 a fourth vector in front of, and parallel with, the second vector collides with the second additional surface; 
 the third and fourth vectors along an additional plane that is in front of, and parallel with, the plane. 
   
     
     
         10 . The apparatus of  claim 6 , wherein the first and second surfaces are sloped surfaces. 
     
     
         11 . The apparatus of  claim 6 , wherein the gas port device includes exterior lateral sides and at least one additional exterior side. 
     
     
         12 . The apparatus of  claim 11 , wherein the at least one cavity is defined by the at least one additional side. 
     
     
         13 . The apparatus of  claim 11 , wherein the surfaces comprise interior sides coinciding with the exterior lateral sides. 
     
     
         14 . The apparatus of  claim 6 , wherein at least part of the at least one egress is located below a centerline of the barrel. 
     
     
         15 . The apparatus of  claim 6 , the attachment interface arranged to fix a rotational position of the gas port device relative to the barrel, or the attachment interface including an opening to expose part of an exterior of the barrel. 
     
     
         16 . The apparatus of  claim 6 , wherein the gas port device defines an opening to fit around the barrel, wherein an interior of the opening is non-threaded. 
     
     
         17 . An apparatus, comprising:
 a compensation system to reduce recoil, the compensation system operable with a barrel that includes 1) a muzzle and 2) at least one egress in a length of the barrel, the compensation system to redirect gas expelled from the at least one egress in the length of the barrel;   the compensation assembly defining at least one cavity to expel the redirected gas, the compensation system including:
 first and second surfaces to redirect at least some of the expelled gas, the at least one egress having bottom exterior edges on different sides of a bore axis of the barrel, and the first and second surfaces positioned so that:
 a first vector extending from the bore axis to the first bottom exterior edge collides with the first surface; 
 a second vector extending from the bore axis to the second bottom exterior edge collides with the second surface; and 
 the first and second vectors along a plane that is perpendicular to the bore axis of the barrel; 
 wherein the surfaces are defined by a non-enclosing length of the compensation assembly, an underside of an exterior of the barrel exposed by the non-enclosing length of the compensation assembly, or 
 wherein 1) the compensation assembly is not a slide and 2) the surfaces are defined by an enclosing length of the compensation assembly that fits around a part of the underside of the exterior of the barrel. 
 
   
     
     
         18 . The apparatus of  claim 17 , wherein a bore of the barrel is at least partially rifled, and wherein the bore or other part of the barrel includes one or more anti-striping features. 
     
     
         19 . The apparatus of  claim 18 , wherein an interior of the bore is smooth, without rifling, extending from the muzzle to a location substantially coinciding with a back of an egress, of the at least one egress, that is closest to the barrel end opposite the muzzle, the location is defined by an intersection of a plane and the interior of the bore, the plane perpendicular to a bore axis of the barrel; and
 the interior of the bore includes rifling rearwardly of the smooth interior.   
     
     
         20 . The apparatus of  claim 19 , wherein the intersection is located rearwardly of the back of the egress. 
     
     
         21 . The apparatus of  claim 18 , wherein the one or more anti-striping features include:
 a chamfer on a front-most bore-edge of the at least one egress;   a circumferential groove in the interior of the bore at a location coinciding with a front-most or a rear-most edge of the at least one egress, or   a bore-edge of an egress of the at least one egress that is closest to the muzzle having a first and second lengths having different profiles.   
     
     
         22 . The apparatus of  claim 18 , wherein the one or more egresses includes two egresses located a same distance from the muzzle, wherein the two recesses are separated by a rib;
 wherein the interior of the bore includes a first smooth region without rifling and a second rifled region with rifling, wherein the different sections are a same distance behind the muzzle and the second rifled region includes an underside of the rib.   
     
     
         23 . The apparatus of  claim 17 , wherein each of the at least one surface comprises one or more walls, and lengths of each of the one or more walls from its bottom to its top is not less than a depth of the at least one cavity, wherein the depth of the at least one cavity is measured along a latitudinal axis that is perpendicular with a bore axis of the barrel. 
     
     
         24 . The apparatus of  claim 17 , wherein the surfaces are defined by the enclosing length and the barrel comprises a non-threaded barrel.
