Abstract

Disclosed herein are novel drainage aids, and the use thereof for treating pulp during the papermaking process.

We claim: 
     
         1 . A drainage aid, said aid comprising a sodium lauryl ether sulfate (SLES)
 wherein said sodium lauryl ether sulfate (SLES) is present in an amount of about 1 wt. % to about 70 wt. % or about 5 wt. % to about 50 wt. %.   
     
     
         2 . The drainage aid of  claim 1 , wherein said aid further comprises a sulfonated anionic surfactant wherein said sulfonated anionic surfactant is present in an amount of about 1 wt. % to about 70 wt. %, 1 wt. % to about 50 wt. %, about 5 wt. % to about 50 wt. %, or about 5 wt. % to about 30 wt. %. 
     
     
         3 . The drainage aid of  claim 2 , wherein said aid further comprises a hydrotrope, wherein said hydrotrope is present in an amount of about 1 wt. % to about 50 wt. % about 5 wt. % to about 30 wt. %, about 1 wt. % to about 10 wt. %, or about 2 wt. % to about 5 wt. %. 
     
     
         4 . The drainage aid of  claim 1 , wherein said aid further comprises one or more nonionic surfactants. 
     
     
         5 . The drainage aid of  claim 4 , wherein said nonionic surfactant comprises tridecyl alcohol ethoxylate, wherein said tridecyl alcohol ethoxylate is present in an amount of about 20 wt. % to about 80 wt. % or about 30 wt. % to about 60 wt. %. 
     
     
         6 . The drainage aid of  claim 5 , further comprises di-(2-ethylhexyl) sodium sulfosuccinate, wherein said di-(2-ethylhexyl) sodium sulfosuccinate is present in an amount of about 0.1 wt. % to about 2 wt. % or about 0.1 wt. % to about 0.75 wt. %. 
     
     
         7 . A drainage aid, wherein said aid comprises one or more nonionic surfactants and optionally a sulfonated anionic surfactant, a sulfated anionic surfactant, or an amphoteric surfactant. 
     
     
         8 . The drainage aid of  claim 7 , wherein said nonionic surfactant comprises tridecyl alcohol ethoxylate wherein said tridecyl alcohol ethoxylate is present in an amount of about 20 wt. % to about 80 wt. % or about 30 wt. % to about 60 wt. %. 
     
     
         9 . The drainage aid of  claim 8  further comprises di-(2-ethylhexyl) sodium sulfosuccinate wherein said di-(2-ethylhexyl) sodium sulfosuccinate is present in an amount of about 0.1 wt. % to about 2 wt. % or about 0.1 wt. % to about 0.75 wt. %. 
     
     
         10 . The drainage aid of  claim 9 , wherein said aid comprises a sulfonated anionic surfactant wherein said sulfonated anionic surfactant is present in an amount of about 10 wt. % to about 80 wt. % or about 20 wt. % to about 60 wt. %. 
     
     
         11 . The drainage aid of  claim 9 , wherein said aid comprises an amphoteric surfactant=wherein said amphoteric surfactant is present in an amount of about 5 wt. % to about 40 wt. % or about 15 wt. % to about 30 wt. %. 
     
     
         12 . The drainage aid of  claim 1 , wherein said aid further comprises one or more of the ingredients chosen from:
 a defoamer is in an amount of about 0.001 wt. % to about 0.1 wt. %;   a preservative is in an amount of about 0.01 wt. % to about 0.1 wt. %; and   a solvent is in an amount of about 2 wt. % to about 70 wt. %.   
     
     
         13 . The drainage aid of  claim 12 , wherein said solvent is chosen from benzyl acetate, benzyl alcohol, methyl benzyl alcohol, alpha phenyl ethanol, benzyl benzoate, benzyloxyethanol, ethylene glycol phenyl ether, propylene glycol phenyl ether, amyl acetate, amyl alcohol, butanol, 3-butoxyethyl-2-propanol, butyl acetate, n-butyl propionate, cyclohexanone, diacetone alcohol, diethoxyethanol, diethylene glycol methyl ether, diisobutyl carbinol, diisobutyl ketone, dimethyl heptanol, dipropylene glycol tert-butyl ether, ethanol, ethyl acetate, 2-ethylhexanol, ethyl propionate, ethylene glycol methyl ether acetate, hexanol, isobutanol, isobutyl acetate, isobutyl heptyl ketone, isophorone, isopropanol, isopropyl acetate, methanol, methyl amyl alcohol, methyl n-amyl ketone, 2-methyl-1-butanol, methyl ethyl ketone, methyl isobutyl ketone, 1-pentanol, n-pentyl propionate, 1-propanol, n-propyl acetate, n-propyl propionate, propylene glycol ethyl ether, tripropylene glycol methyl ether, tripropylene glycol n-butyl ether, diethylene glycol n-butyl ether acetate, diethylene glycol monobutyl ether, ethylene glycol n-butyl ether acetate, ethylene glycol monobutyl ether, dipropylene glycol monobutyl ether, propylene glycol monobutyl ether, ethyl 3-ethoxypropionate, 2,2,4-Trimethyl-1,3-Pentanediol Monoisobutyrate, diethylene glycol monohexyl ether, ethylene glycol monohexyl ether, diethylene glycol monomethyl ether, diethylene glycol monoethyl ether, ethylene glycol methyl ether acetate, ethylene glycol monomethyl ether, dipropylene glycol monomethyl ether, methanol, propylene glycol methyl ether acetate, propylene glycol monomethyl ether, diethylene glycol monopropyl ether, ethylene glycol monopropyl ether, dipropylene glycol monopropyl ether and propylene glycol monopropyl ether. 
     
     
         14 . A method for treating pulp, said method comprising adding sodium lauryl ether sulfate (SLES), and optionally one or more component chosen from a sulfonated anionic surfactant, a hydrotrope, a nonionic surfactant, and di-(2-ethylhexyl) sodium sulfosuccinate, a defoamer, a preservative, and a solvent, or a combination thereof to untreated pulp to obtain treated pulp;
 wherein said SLES and said component is separately added to said untreated pulp; or combined into a single composition and then added to said untreated pulp;   wherein said sodium lauryl ether sulfate (SLES) is present in an amount of about 1 wt. % to about 70 wt. % or about 5 wt. % to about 50 wt. %;   wherein said sulfonated anionic surfactant is present in an amount of about 1 wt. % to about 50 wt. % or about 5 wt. % to about 30 wt. %;   wherein said hydrotrope is present in an amount of about 1 wt. % to about 10 wt. % or about 2 wt. % to about 5 wt. %;   wherein said di-(2-ethylhexyl) sodium sulfosuccinate is present in an amount of about 0.1 wt. % to about 2 wt. % or about 0.1 wt. % to about 0.75 wt. %;   wherein said defoamer is in an amount of about 0.001% to about 0.1%;   wherein said a preservative is in an amount of about 0.01% to about 0.1%; and   wherein said a solvent is in an amount of about 2% to about 70%.   
     
     
         15 . The method of  claim 14 , wherein one or more of said nonionic surfactant comprises tridecyl alcohol ethoxylate. 
     
     
         16 . The method of  claim 15 , wherein said tridecyl alcohol ethoxylate is present in an amount of about 20 wt. % to about 80 wt. % or about 30 wt. % to about 60 wt. %. 
     
     
         17 . The method of  claim 14 , said method comprising adding one or more drainage aids at one or more points along the fiber line of a papermaking process. 
     
     
         18 . The method of  claim 17 , wherein said aid is added at the brown washing stage, O 2  stage, and/or bleaching stage. 
     
     
         19 . The method of  claim 17 , wherein said aid is added at an extraction step E wherein E can be E, Eo, Ep or Eop. 
     
     
         20 . The method of  claim 19 , wherein said method of treating pulp comprises a composition of a wash aid and pulp. 
     
     
         21 . The drainage aid of  claim 7 , wherein said sulfated anionic surfactant is sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) or SLES, or a combination thereof. 
     
     
         22 . The drainage aid of  claim 7 , wherein said nonionic surfactant is present in an amount of about 20-80 wt. %. 
     
     
         23 . A composition comprising an aid of  claim 1  and pulp.
