Abstract

A method of forming a golf club head that is capable improving on the inertia properties of a golf club head all while also improving the Center of Gravity (CG) location is disclosed herein. More specifically, the method forms a golf club head that achieves a relative low Moment of Inertia (MOI) about the Z-axis (MOI-Z) as well as a relatively low MOI about the Shaft-axis (MOI-SA).

Claims

exact text as granted — not AI-modified
What is claimed is:

         1 . A method of forming a golf club comprising the steps of:
 forming a frontal portion comprised of a crown return, a sole return and a striking face, comprised of titanium; forming a rear portion and a plurality of support members therein by:
 forming a wax rear portion comprised of a wax crown at an upper portion and a wax sole on a bottom portion;
 forming a plurality of wax support members;
 coupling the wax support members to an inner surface of the wax rear portion such that the wax support members extend from the wax crown to the wax sole and from a back edge toward a front edge of the wax rear portion, wherein a first wax support member is coupled to the wax rear portion near a central portion of the wax rear portion in a heel-to-toe orientation, to form a final rear wax; and
 using the final rear wax to cast the rear portion and the plurality of support members from titanium; and
   welding the rear portion to the frontal portion.

         2 . The method of forming a golf club of claim 1 , wherein the step of forming the plurality of wax support members comprises forming the first wax support member such that it has a first maximum height parallel to a y-axis so that when coupled to the wax rear portion, it abuts the wax crown and the wax sole, and has a first maximum depth parallel to a z-axis and a first thickness and the first maximum depth is greater than the first maximum height and the first thickness is between 0.5 mm and 1.5 mm.

         3 . The method of forming a golf club of claim 2 , wherein the step of forming the first wax support member comprises forming a plurality of angled strut members that form angles α in between the angled strut members of between 30 degrees and 100 degrees.

         4 . The method of forming a golf club of claim 3 , wherein the step of coupling the wax support members comprises coupling a second wax support member such that it is on a toe side of the first wax support member, between 20% and 70% of a distance from the first wax support member and a furthest toe edge of the wax rear portion, and coupling a third wax support member such that it is on a heel side of the first wax support member, between 20% and 70% of a distance from the first wax support member and a furthest heel edge of the wax rear portion.

         5 . The method of forming a golf club of claim 4 , wherein the step of forming the wax support members comprises forming the second wax support member and the third wax support member to have a plurality of second and third angled strut members that form angles α in between the second and third angled strut members of between 30 degrees and 100 degrees.
