Abstract

The invention relates to drinking cups comprising a sidewall that is composed of a multilayer cardboard comprising one or more crosslinked polysiloxane layers [A]; a pigment coating or barrier coating layer [B]; a fiber based substrate layer [C]; optionally, a pigment coating layer [D]; a printed layer [E] comprising a printed image and/or decoration; and optionally, one or more crosslinked polysiloxane layers [F]. The multilayer cardboard preferably has a Cobb 600 value determined according to EN ISO 535 of at least 0.2 g·m 2 . Preferably, the multilayer cardboard has a total content of polyolefins of at most 5.0 wt.-%, relative to the total weight of the multilayer cardboard.

1 . A drinking cup for receiving a beverage, a sidewall having a rim, and a bottom, wherein the sidewall has a first edge and a second edge which are arranged in an overlapping manner at a side seam area; wherein the sidewall is composed of a multilayer cardboard further comprising:
 one or more crosslinked polysiloxane layers [A] having a total area weight, determined according to EN ISO 536, within the range of from 0.1 to 50 g·m −2 ;   a pigment coating or barrier coating layer [B] having an area weight, determined according to EN ISO 536, within the range of from 0.1 to 50 g·m −2 ;   a fiber based substrate layer [C] having an area weight, determined according to EN ISO 536, within the range of from 50 to 750 g·m 2 ;   optionally, a pigment coating layer [D] having an area weight, determined according to EN ISO 536, within the range of from 0.1 to 50 g·m −2 ;   a printed layer [E] comprising at least one of a printed image and a decoration; and   optionally, one or more crosslinked polysiloxane layers [F] having a total area weight, determined according to EN ISO 536, within the range of from 0.1 to 50 g·m 2 ;   
       wherein the one or more crosslinked polysiloxane layers [A] face the interior of the drinking cup. 
     
     
         2 . The drinking cup according to  claim 1 , which has a total content of polyolefins of at most 5.0 wt.-%, relative to a total weight of the multilayer cardboard.

The drinking cup according to  claim 1 , wherein the one or more crosslinked polysiloxane layers [A], the pigment coating or barrier coating layer [B], the fiber based substrate layer [C], the pigment coating layer [D], if present, the printed layer [E], and the one or more crosslinked polysiloxane layers [F], if present, are arranged in alphabetical order.

The drinking cup according to  claim 1 , wherein the fiber based substrate layer [C] has an area weight, determined according to EN ISO 536, within the range of 200±100 g·m −2 , or 225±100 g·m −2 , or 250±100 g·m −2 , or 275±100 g·m −2 , or 300±100 g·m −2 , or 325±100 g·m −2 , or 350±100 g·m −2 , or 375±100 g·m −2 , or 400±100 g·m −2  or 425±100 g·m −2 , or 450±100 g·m −2 .

 the pigment coating or barrier coating layer [B] and the optionally present pigment coating layer [D] independently of one another each comprise a binder,   each of the pigment coating or barrier coating layer [B] and the optionally present pigment coating layer [D] independently of one another comprise, relative to a total weight of the pigment coating or barrier coating layer [B] and the optionally present pigment coating layer [D]:
 the binder within a range of from 5.0 to 20 wt.-%, and 
 the pigment within a range of from 80 to 95 wt.-%.

The drinking cup according to  claim 1 , wherein the pigment coating or barrier coating layer [B] and the optionally present pigment coating layer [D] independently of one another have an area weight, determined according to EN ISO 536, within the range of 10.0±5.0 g·m −2 , or 12.5±5.0 g·m −2 , or 15.0±5.0 g·m −2 .

The drinking cup according to  claim 1 , wherein the one or more crosslinked polysiloxane layers [A] and the optionally present one or more crosslinked polysiloxane layers [F] independently of one another are each derived from a sol-gel composition and the sol-gel composition comprises:
 optionally, one or more tetraalkoxy silanes;   acryloxyalkyl trialkoxy silanes;   optionally, a reactive diluent; and   optionally, one or more metal alcoholates.

 the layer [E] only partially covers the layer [C] along the side seam area at the first edge and the strip of primer along the side seam area is applied on top of the layer [C] at the first edge; and   the layer [A] only partially covers the layer [B] along the side seam area at the second edge and the strip of primer along the side seam area is applied on top of the layer [B] at the second edge.

         59 . A process for the preparation of a drinking cup, the process comprising the steps of:
 (a) providing a laminate of:
 a pigment coating or barrier coating layer [B] having an area weight, determined according to EN ISO 536, within the range of from 0.1 to 50 g·m −2 ; 
 a fiber based substrate layer [C] having an area weight, determined according to EN ISO 536, within the range of from 50 to 750 g·m −2 ; and 
 optionally, a pigment coating layer [D] having an area weight, determined according to EN ISO 536, within the range of from 0.1 to 50 g·m −2 ; 
   (b) applying at least one of a printed image and a decoration to (i) the surface of the fiber based substrate layer [C] or (ii), when the laminate comprises the optional pigment coating layer [D], to (ii) the surface of the pigment coating layer [D], thereby providing a printed laminate of:
 the pigment coating or barrier coating layer [B] having an area weight, determined according to EN ISO 536, within the range of from 0.1 to 50 g·m −2 ; 
 the fiber based substrate layer [C] having an area weight, determined according to EN ISO 536, within the range of from 50 to 750 g·m −2 ; 
 optionally, the pigment coating layer [D] having an area weight, determined according to EN ISO 536, within the range of from 0.1 to 50 g·m −2 ; and 
 the printed layer [E] comprising at least one of the printed image and the decoration; 
   (c) applying a sol-gel composition to the surface of the pigment coating or barrier coating layer [B] and optionally also to the surface of the printed layer [E], independently of one another as a single layer or a multitude of layers; wherein the sol-gel composition comprises at least one of a crosslinkable non-functionalized silane and a crosslinkable functionalized silane;   (d) crosslinking at least one of the non-functionalized silane and the functionalized silane;   (e) optionally, drying the sol-gel composition; and   (f) obtaining an element from the thus obtained laminated cardboard and forming the drinking cup from the element.
