Abstract

An adjustable chair may include a frame, a seat pan, a backrest, a pair of arm rests, at least two legs each comprising an inner leg configured to telescope out of an outer leg, and a leg locking system for locking the outer leg to the inner leg.

The invention claimed is:

         2 . A portable chair comprising:
 a seat pan comprising a pair of seat bars,   a backrest comprising a pair of backrest bars and a fabric;   a front frame comprising a pair of front cross bars;   a pair of legs connected to the front frame; wherein each leg of the pair of legs comprises an inner leg and an outer leg, and wherein the inner leg is configured to telescope out of the outer leg;   a rear frame comprising a first rear cross bar and a second rear cross bar; and   a tensioner configured to maintain the backrest in an unfolded position, the tensioner connected to the rear frame, wherein the tensioner comprises a first tensioner arm, a second tensioner arm, a tensioner housing, and a handle connected to the tensioner housing, wherein the first tensioner arm and the second tensioner arm are pivotally connected to the tensioner housing and the first tensioner arm is pivotally connected to the first rear cross bar and the second tensioner arm is pivotally connected to the second tensioner arm; and   wherein the fabric is tensioned when the handle is moved downward, and wherein the tension is released from the fabric when the handle is moved upward.   
     
     
         3 . The portable chair of  claim 2 , wherein the tensioner housing includes an arcuate slot; and
 wherein the tensioner includes a first projection that engages the arcuate slot to limit travel of the first tensioner arm.   
     
     
         4 . The portable chair of  claim 3 , wherein the tensioner housing includes a second arcuate slot; and
 wherein the tensioner includes a second projection that engages the second arcuate slot to limit travel of the second tensioner arm.   
     
     
         5 . The portable chair of  claim 3 , wherein the first tensioner arm is connected to the tensioner housing with a hold pin to allow the first tensioner arm to pivot relative to the tensioner housing, and
 wherein the first tensioner arm has a first end and a second end opposite the first end, wherein the first projection is nearer to the first end than the hold pin.   
     
     
         6 . The portable chair of  claim 3 , wherein the tensioned fabric is configured to retain the first projection in engagement with an inward end of the arcuate slot at an end of travel of the first tensioner arm. 
     
     
         7 . The portable chair of  claim 2 , wherein the tensioner housing is located below the handle. 
     
     
         8 . The portable chair of  claim 2 , wherein each leg of the pair of legs includes a leg locking system for locking the outer leg to the inner leg when the chair is in the unfolded position, wherein the leg locking system comprises a latch that extends into a first opening on the outer leg and a second opening on the inner leg to lock the outer leg to the inner leg when the leg locking system is in a locked position. 
     
     
         9 . The portable chair of  claim 2 , wherein the fabric has an overlap and a core placed into a hollow section created by the overlap and wherein the core in the hollow section is secured in a notch located off-center in a top portion of the pair of backrest bars. 
     
     
         10 . A portable chair comprising:
 a seat pan comprising a pair of seat bars,   a front frame comprising a pair of cross bars;   a first leg connected to the front frame;   a second leg connected to the front frame;   a rear frame comprising a first rear cross bar and a second rear cross bar;   a backrest comprising a first backrest bar connected to the first leg and a second backrest bar connected to the second leg, wherein the backrest comprises a fabric between the first backrest bar and the second backrest bar;   wherein the first leg comprises a first inner leg and a first outer leg, wherein the first inner leg is configured to telescope out of the first outer leg; and wherein the second leg comprises a second inner leg and a second outer leg, wherein the second inner leg is configured to telescope out of the second outer leg; and   a tensioner comprising a tensioner housing, a handle, a pair of tensioner arms pivotally connected to the tensioner housing, and a stop; and   wherein the tensioner is configured to tension the fabric when a user applies downward force to the handle until a first tensioner arm of the pair of tensioner arms contacts the stop, and wherein the tensioned fabric biases at least one of the pair of tensioner arms against the stop.   
     
     
         11 . The portable chair of  claim 10 , wherein the first leg includes a leg locking system engaged to the first outer leg, wherein the leg locking system locks the first outer leg to the first inner leg when the chair is in an unfolded position. 
     
     
         12 . The portable chair of  claim 11 , wherein the leg locking system comprises a latch that extends into a first opening on the first outer leg and a second opening on the first inner leg to lock the first outer leg to the first inner leg when the leg locking system is in a locked position. 
     
     
         13 . The portable chair of  claim 12 , wherein the tensioner is configured to move the first backrest bar away from the second backrest bar when the user applies downward force to the handle. 
     
     
         14 . The portable chair of  claim 13 , wherein the tensioner is configured to move the first backrest bar toward the second backrest bar when the user applies upward force to the handle. 
     
     
         15 . A portable chair comprising:
 a seat pan comprising a pair of seat bars,   a front frame comprising a pair of cross bars;   a first leg connected to the front frame;   a second leg connected to the front frame;
 wherein the first leg comprises a first inner leg and a first outer leg, wherein the first inner leg is configured to telescope out of the first outer leg; and wherein the second leg comprises a second inner leg and a second outer leg, wherein the second inner leg is configured to telescope out of the second outer leg; 
   a rear frame comprising by a first rear cross bar and a second rear cross bar;   a backrest comprising a fabric; and   a tensioner comprising a tensioner housing, a handle, a first tensioner arm pivotally connected to the tensioner housing and also pivotally connected to the rear frame, and a second tensioner arm pivotally connected to the tensioner housing and also pivotally connected to the rear frame; and   wherein when the tensioner is configured to move an upper portion of the first rear cross bar away from an upper portion of the second rear cross bar when a downward force is applied to the handle until an over-center point is reached such that the tensioner maintains a width of the rear frame when the portable chair is in an unfolded position.   
     
     
         16 . The portable chair of  claim 15 , wherein the tensioner maintains the width of the rear frame, the first tensioner arm and the second tensioner arm are substantially parallel with a top surface of a stop of the tensioner. 
     
     
         17 . The portable chair of  claim 15 , wherein the tensioner housing comprises a pair of slots, and wherein the first tensioner arm includes a first projection that engages a first slot of the pair of slots to limit travel of the first tensioner arm and a second projection that engages a second slot of the pair of slots to limit travel of the second tensioner arm. 
     
     
         18 . The portable chair of  claim 17 , wherein the first tensioner arm is pivotally connected to the tensioner housing with a first hold pin and is pivotally connected to the first rear cross bar of the rear frame with a tensioner cap; and
 wherein the first hold pin is positioned on the first tensioner arm between the first projection and the tensioner cap.   
     
     
         19 . The portable chair of  claim 15 , wherein the first leg includes a leg locking system engaged to the first outer leg, wherein the leg locking system locks the first outer leg to the first inner leg when the chair is in the unfolded position, and wherein the leg locking system comprises a latch that extends into a first opening on the first outer leg and a second opening on the first inner leg to lock the first outer leg to the first inner leg when the leg locking system is in a locked position. 
     
     
         20 . The portable chair of  claim 15 , wherein the fabric comprises a yarn formed from an elastomer; and wherein the fabric biases the first tensioner arm against a stop of the tensioner housing when the tensioner is engaged. 
     
     
         21 . The portable chair of  claim 15 , wherein the tensioner is configured to move the upper portion of the first rear cross bar toward the second rear cross bar when an upward force is applied to the handle.
