Multi-material golf club head

Abstract

A multi-material golf club head wherein the junction between the two different components made from different materials are seamlessly incorporated within existing visual cues of a golf club head is disclosed. More specifically, the present invention adjusts the design of the bond between the two different components to reflect the needs of the golf club head at the various visual cues around the perimeter of the golf club head.

What is claimed is: 
     
         1 . A golf club head comprising:
 a body portion further comprising;
 a face cup, made out of a second material having a second density,
 wherein said face cup further comprises a rearward facing internal recess at a rear portion of said face cup, 
 wherein said face cup further comprises an upward facing recess around an upper portion of said face cup, and 
 wherein said face cup forms a striking face portion that defines a forwardmost vertical plane, 
 
 a lower aft body, made out of a first material having a first density,
 wherein said lower aft body further comprises a forward facing external recess at a forward portion of said lower aft body, and 
 wherein said lower aft body further comprises an upward facing recess around an upper portion of said lower aft body, 
 
 wherein said rearward facing internal recess of said face cup is adapted to engage said forward facing external recess of said lower aft body to form said body portion, 
   a crown portion overlaps both said upward facing recess of said face cup and said upward facing recess of said lower aft body to form a crown.   
     
     
         2 . The golf club head of  claim 1 , wherein said crown portion is made out said first material having said first density. 
     
     
         3 . The golf club head of  claim 2 , wherein said first density is lower than said second density. 
     
     
         4 . The golf club head of  claim 3 , wherein said first density is less than about 2.0 g/cc. 
     
     
         5 . The golf club head of  claim 4 , wherein said second density is greater than about 4.3 g/cc. 
     
     
         6 . The golf club head of  claim 1 , wherein a forwardmost point of said crown portion is located less than about 17.5 mm away from said forwardmost vertical plane. 
     
     
         7 . The golf club head of  claim 6 , wherein said forwardmost point of said crown portion is located less than about 16.5 mm away from said forwardmost vertical plane. 
     
     
         8 . The golf club head of  claim 7 , wherein said forwardmost point of said crown portion is located less than about 15.5 mm away from said forwardmost vertical plane. 
     
     
         9 . The golf club head of  claim 1 , wherein said crown portion has a Hosel Portion Crown Transition Slope of less than about −0.036 over the first 22.5 mm of a hosel transition. 
     
     
         10 . The golf club head of  claim 9 , wherein said crown portion has a Hosel Portion Crown Transition Slope of less than about −0.038 over the first 22.5 mm of a hosel transition. 
     
     
         11 . The golf club head of  claim 10 , wherein said crown portion has a Hosel Portion Crown Transition Slope of less than about −0.045 over the first 22.5 mm of a hosel transition. 
     
     
         12 . The golf club head of  claim 1 , wherein said crown portion forms a portion of an uppermost point of said striking face. 
     
     
         13 . A golf club head comprising:
 a body portion further comprising;
 a face cup, made out of a second material having a second density,
 wherein said face cup further comprises a rearward facing internal recess at a rear portion of said face cup, 
 wherein said face cup further comprises an upward facing recess around an upper portion of said face cup, and 
 wherein said face cup forms a striking face portion that defines a forwardmost vertical plane, 
 
 a lower aft body, made out of a first material having a first density,
 wherein said lower aft body further comprises a forward facing external recess at a forward portion of said lower aft body, and 
 wherein said lower aft body further comprises an upward facing recess around an upper portion of said lower aft body, 
 
 wherein said rearward facing internal recess of said face cup is adapted to engage said forward facing external recess of said lower aft body to form said body portion, 
   a crown portion overlaps both said upward facing recess of said face cup and said upward facing recess of said lower aft body to form a crown,   wherein said first density is lower than said second density, and   wherein said crown portion forms a portion of an uppermost point of said striking face.   
     
     
         14 . The golf club head of  claim 13 , wherein said forwardmost point of said crown portion is located less than about 17.5 mm away from said forwardmost vertical plane. 
     
     
         15 . The golf club head of  claim 14 , wherein said forwardmost point of said crown portion is located less than about 16.5 mm away from said forwardmost vertical plane. 
     
     
         16 . The golf club head of  claim 15 , wherein said forwardmost point of said crown portion is located less than about 15.5 mm away from said forwardmost vertical plane. 
     
     
         17 . The golf club head of  claim 14 , wherein said upward facing recess further defines a crown transition overlap length of greater than about 12 mm and less than about 25 mm. 
     
     
         18 . The golf club head of  claim 17 , wherein said crown transition overlap length is greater than about 13 mm and less than about 24 mm. 
     
     
         19 . The golf club head of  claim 18 , wherein said crown transition overlap length is greater than about 14 mm and less than about 23.5 mm. 
     
     
         20 . The golf club head of  claim 17 , wherein said second density is greater than said first density.
