Abstract

An online system receives a recipe from a customer mobile device. The online system performs natural language processing on the recipe to determine parsed ingredients. For each of one or more of the determined parsed ingredients, the online system maps the parsed ingredient to a generic item. The online system queries a product database with the mapped generic item to obtain one or more products associated with the mapped generic item. The online system applies a machine-learned conversion model to each of the one or more products to determine a conversion likelihood for the product. The conversion model may be trained based on historical data describing previous conversions made by customers presented with an opportunity to add products to an order. The online system selects a product from the one or more products based on the determined conversion likelihoods and adds the selected product to an order.

Claims

What is claimed is:

         1 . A computer-implemented method comprising:
 receiving, by an online system, via a uniform resource locator (URL) of a third-party webpage displayed by a client device of a user, a user interaction with a user interface element provided by the webpage; identifying user information associated with the user based on the user interaction; extracting text content from the webpage and processing the extracted text content to a set of parsed ingredient text from the extracted content; for each of one or more of the set of parsed ingredient text: querying a search system using the parsed ingredient text to identify candidate items, wherein querying the search system comprises querying a database of items that are available from the online system; receiving an output from the search system, the output comprising a ranked list of the candidate items that match the parsed ingredient text; and selecting an item from the candidate items based on a respective rank of each of the candidate items; causing the client device to transition from displaying the webpage to displaying a user interface that presents an order associated with the user; and automatically adding the selected item to the order associated with the user.

         2 . The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the webpage comprises an iframe that provides the user interface element for the user interaction, and the user interaction indicates a request associated with the recipe.

         3 . The computer-implemented method of  claim 2 , further comprising:
 receiving an identifier of the webpage where the iframe is located; and identifying the text content based on the identifier of the webpage.

         4 . The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the user interface element comprises a link that is incorporated in the text content for a recipe, and the user interaction with the user interface element causes a transmission of the text content for the recipe to the online system.

         5 . The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein identifying user information comprises:
 determining a user identity identifying the user; and retrieving, from a user database, user information associated with the user based on the determined user identity.

         6 . The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein querying the search system comprises:
 applying a model to each of the candidate items to determine a conversion likelihood for each based on the user information; and ranking the candidate items based on the determined conversion likelihood.

         7 . A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium storing instructions that, when executed, cause a processor to perform steps comprising:
 receiving, by an online system, via a uniform resource locator (URL) of a third-party webpage displayed by a client device of a user, a user interaction with a user interface element provided by the webpage; identifying user information associated with the user based on the user interaction; extracting text content from the webpage and processing the extracted text content to a set of parsed ingredient text from the extracted content; for each of one or more of the set of parsed ingredient text: querying a search system using the parsed ingredient text to identify candidate items, wherein querying the search system comprises querying a database of items that are available from the online system; receiving an output from the search system, the output comprising a ranked list of the candidate items that match the parsed ingredient text; and selecting an item from the candidate items based on a respective rank of each of the candidate items; causing the client device to transition from displaying the webpage to displaying a user interface that presents an order associated with the user; and automatically adding the selected item to the order associated with the user.

         8 . The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 7 , wherein the webpage comprises an iframe that provides the user interface element for the user interaction, and the user interaction indicates a request associated with the recipe.

         9 . The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 8 , wherein the non-transitory computer-readable storage medium further stores instructions that, when executed, cause the processor to perform steps comprising:
 receiving an identifier of the webpage where the iframe is located; and identifying the text content based on the identifier of the webpage.

         10 . The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 7 , wherein the user interface element comprises a link that is incorporated in the text content for a recipe, and the user interaction with the user interface element causes a transmission of the text content for the recipe to the online system.

         11 . The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 7 , wherein identifying user information comprises:
 determining a user identity identifying the user; and retrieving, from a user database, user information associated with the user based on the determined user identity.

         12 . The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 7 , wherein querying the search system comprises:
 applying a model to each of the candidate items to determine a conversion likelihood for each based on the user information; and ranking the candidate items based on the determined conversion likelihood.

         13 . A system comprising:
 a processor; and a non-transitory computer-readable storage medium storing instructions that, when executed, cause the processor to perform steps comprising:
 receiving, by an online system, via a uniform resource locator (URL) of a third-party webpage displayed by a client device of a user, a user interaction with a user interface element provided by the webpage;
 identifying user information associated with the user based on the user interaction;
 extracting text content from the webpage and processing the extracted text content to a set of parsed ingredient text from the extracted content;
