Abstract

A novel hybrid sweet corn plant, designated AIRLIE is disclosed. The disclosure relates to the seeds of hybrid sweet corn designated AIRLIE, to the plants and plant parts of hybrid sweet corn designated AIRLIE, and to methods for producing a sweet corn plant by crossing the hybrid sweet corn AIRLIE with itself or another sweet corn plant.

What is claimed is: 
     
         1 . A seed of hybrid sweet corn designated AIRLIE, wherein a representative sample of seed of said hybrid has been deposited under NCIMB No. ______. 
     
     
         2 . A sweet corn plant, a part thereof, or a cell thereof, wherein the sweet corn plant produced by growing the seed of  claim 1  has all of the physiological and morphological characteristics of hybrid sweet corn designated AIRLIE deposited under NCIMB No. ______. 
     
     
         3 . The sweet corn plant, the part thereof, or the cell thereof of  claim 2 , wherein the part is selected from the group consisting of a leaf, a flower, an ear, a kernel, a stalk, a root, a rootstock, a scion, a AIRLIEseed, an embryo, a peduncle, a stamen, an anther, a pistil, a pollen, an ovule, a meristem, and a cell. 
     
     
         4 . A tissue culture of regenerable cells produced from the sweet corn plant or the part thereof of  claim 2 , wherein a sweet corn plant regenerated from the tissue culture has all of the physiological and morphological characteristics of hybrid sweet corn designated AIRLIE deposited under NCIMB No. ______. 
     
     
         5 . A sweet corn plant regenerated from the tissue culture of  claim 4 , said plant having all of the physiological and morphological characteristics of hybrid sweet corn designated AIRLIE deposited under NCIMB No. ______. 
     
     
         6 . A sweet corn ear produced from the plant of  claim 2 . 
     
     
         7 . A method for harvesting a sweet corn ear, the method comprising: (a) growing the sweet corn plant of  claim 2  to produce a sweet corn ear, and (b) harvesting said sweet corn ear. 
     
     
         8 . A sweet corn ear produced by the method of  claim 7 . 
     
     
         9 . A method for producing a sweet corn seed, the method comprising: (a) crossing a first sweet corn plant with a second sweet corn plant and (b) harvesting the resultant sweet corn seed, wherein said first sweet corn plant and/or second sweet corn plant is the sweet corn plant of  claim 2 . 
     
     
         10 . A method for producing a sweet corn seed, the method comprising: (a) self-pollinating the sweet corn plant of  claim 2  and (b) harvesting the resultant sweet corn seed. 
     
     
         11 . A method of vegetatively propagating the sweet corn plant of  claim 2 , the method comprising: (a) collecting a part capable of being propagated from the plant of  claim 2  and (b) regenerating a plant from said part. 
     
     
         12 . The method of  claim 11 , further comprising (c) harvesting an ear from said regenerated plant. 
     
     
         13 . A plant obtained from the method of  claim 11 , wherein said plant has all of the physiological and morphological characteristics of hybrid sweet corn designated AIRLIE deposited under NCIMB No. ______. 
     
     
         14 . An ear obtained from the method of  claim 12 . 
     
     
         15 . A method of producing a sweet corn plant derived from hybrid sweet corn designated AIRLIE, the method comprising: (a) self-pollinating the plant of  claim 2  at least once to produce a progeny plant. 
     
     
         16 . The method of  claim 15 , further comprising the steps of:
 (b) crossing the progeny plant derived from the hybrid sweet corn designated AIRLIE with itself or a second sweet corn plant to produce a seed of progeny plant of subsequent generation;   (c) growing the progeny plant of the subsequent generation from the seed;   (d) crossing the progeny plant of the subsequent generation with itself or a second sweet corn plant to produce a sweet corn plant derived from the hybrid sweet corn designated AIRLIE; and   (e) repeating step (c) and/or (d) for at least one generation to produce a sweet corn plant derived from the hybrid sweet corn designated AIRLIE.   
     
     
         17 . A method of producing a sweet corn plant derived from hybrid sweet corn designated AIRLIE, the method comprising: (a) crossing the plant of  claim 2  with a second sweet corn plant to produce a progeny plant. 
     
     
         18 . The method of  claim 17 , further comprising the steps of:
 (b) crossing the progeny plant derived from the hybrid sweet corn plant designated AIRLIE with itself or a second sweet corn plant to produce a seed of progeny plant of subsequent generation;   (c) growing the progeny plant of the subsequent generation from the seed;   (d) crossing the progeny plant of the subsequent generation with itself or a second sweet corn plant to produce a sweet corn plant derived from the sweet corn hybrid sweet corn plant designated AIRLIE; and   (e) repeating step (b) and/or (c) to produce a sweet corn plant derived from the hybrid sweet corn plant designated AIRLIE.   
     
     
         19 . A method of producing a plant of hybrid sweet corn designated AIRLIE comprising at least one desired trait, the method comprising introducing a single locus conversion conferring the desired trait into hybrid sweet corn designated AIRLIE, whereby a plant of hybrid sweet corn designated AIRLIE comprising the desired trait is produced. 
     
     
         20 . A sweet corn plant, a part thereof, or a cell thereof, produced by the method of  claim 19 , wherein the plant, the part thereof, or the cell thereof comprises a single locus conversion and essentially all of the characteristics of hybrid sweet corn designated AIRLIE deposited under NCIMB No. ______. 
     
     
         21 . The plant of  claim 20 , wherein the single locus conversion confers said plant with male sterility, herbicide resistance, insect resistance, disease resistance, water-stress tolerance, heat stress tolerance, increased shelf life, increased sweetness and flavor, enhanced nutritional quality, improved nutritional use efficiency, increased sugar content, delayed senescence or controlled ripening and/or improved salt tolerance. 
     
     
         22 . The plant of  claim 20 , wherein the single locus conversion is introduced into the plant by the use of recurrent selection, mutation breeding, wherein said mutation breeding selects for a mutation that is spontaneous or artificially induced, backcrossing, pedigree breeding, haploid/double haploid production, marker-assisted selection, genetic transformation, genomic selection, synthetic genomics, Zinc finger nuclease (ZFN), oligonucleotide directed mutagenesis, cisgenesis, intragenesis, RNA-dependent DNA methylation, agro-infiltration, Transcription Activation-Like Effector Nuclease (TALEN), CRISPR/Cas system, engineered meganuclease, engineered homing endonuclease, and/or DNA guided genome editing. 
     
     
         23 . A method of producing a sweet corn plant, the method comprising grafting a rootstock or a scion of the hybrid sweet corn plant of  claim 2  to another sweet corn plant. 
     
     
         24 . A method for producing nucleic acids, the method comprising isolating nucleic acids from the plant of  claim 2 , or a part, or a cell thereof. 
     
     
         25 . A method for producing a second sweet corn plant, the method comprising applying plant breeding techniques to the plant or part of  claim 2  to produce the second sweet corn plant.
