Abstract

A method is described for monitoring strain in a borehole, that may include receiving fiber optic sensing data recorded in the borehole; identifying fingerprint signatures in the fiber optic sensing data caused by known markers; and using the fingerprint signatures to monitor changes in the borehole. The known markers may include downhole jewelry or lithology along the borehole.

What is claimed is: 
     
         1 . A computer-implemented method of monitoring strain in a borehole, comprising:
 a. receiving fiber optic sensing data recorded in the borehole;   b. identifying fingerprint signatures in the fiber optic sensing data caused by known markers; and   c. using the fingerprint signatures to monitor changes in the borehole.   
     
     
         2 . The method of  claim 1  wherein the known markers include downhole jewelry. 
     
     
         3 . The method of  claim 1  wherein the known markers include changes in lithology along the borehole. 
     
     
         4 . A computer system, comprising:
 one or more processors;   memory; and   
       one or more programs, wherein the one or more programs are stored in the memory and configured to be executed by the one or more processors, the one or more programs including instructions that when executed by the one or more processors cause the system to:
 a. receive fiber optic sensing data recorded in the borehole; 
 b. identify fingerprint signatures in the fiber optic sensing data caused by known markers; and 
 c. use the fingerprint signatures to monitor changes in the borehole. 
 
     
     
         5 . The computer system of  claim 4  wherein the known markers include downhole jewelry. 
     
     
         6 . The computer system of  claim 4  wherein the known markers include changes in lithology along the borehole. 
     
     
         7 . A non-transitory computer readable storage medium storing one or more programs, the one or more programs comprising instructions, which when executed by an electronic device with one or more processors and memory, cause the device to
 a. receive fiber optic sensing data recorded in the borehole;   b. identify fingerprint signatures in the fiber optic sensing data caused by known markers; and   c. use the fingerprint signatures to monitor changes in the borehole.   
     
     
         8 . The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of  claim 7  wherein the known markers include downhole jewelry. 
     
     
         9 . The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of  claim 7  wherein the known markers include changes in lithology along the borehole.
