Abstract

An adjustable bed system includes a mattress and an adjustment mechanism. The mattress includes a head portion and a foot portion rearward of the head portion. The head portion defines a cavity that is downwardly open. The adjustment mechanism includes a lower base, an upper support that is movably coupled to the lower base, and an actuator operable to move the upper support relative to the lower base. The adjustment mechanism is positioned in the cavity and is coupled to the mattress. When the actuator is operated, the adjustment mechanism moves the adjustable bed system between a flat configuration in which the head portion is substantially coplanar with the foot portion and an inclined configuration in which the head portion is inclined relative to the foot portion.

Claims

exact text as granted — not AI-modified
1 - 20 . (canceled)

21 . A method of providing an adjustable bed system having a mattress with a head portion and a foot portion and also having an adjustment mechanism that lifts the head portion from a first configuration in which a first upper surface of the head portion and a second upper surface of the foot portion are substantially coplanar to a second configuration in which first upper surface is inclined relative to the second upper surface, the method comprising:
compressing the head portion of the mattress a lesser distance than the foot portion of the mattress.

22 . The method of claim 21 , further comprising retaining the head portion and the foot portion in compressed states.

23 . The method of claim 22 , wherein the retaining of the head portion and the foot portion in the compressed states includes sealing the mattress in sealed packaging.

24 . The method of claim 23 , wherein the adjustment mechanism is contained in the sealed packaging.

25 . The method of claim 23 , wherein the retaining of the head portion and the foot portion in the compressed states further includes retaining the mattress with banding.

26 . The method of claim 21 , further comprising inserting the adjustment mechanism into a cavity of the head portion of the mattress, the inserting being performed before the compressing.

27 . The method of claim 21 , further comprising folding the mattress such that an upper surface of the head portion faces another upper surface of the foot portion.

28 . The method of claim 27 , further comprising retaining the head portion and the foot portion in compressed states, the retaining in the compressed states being performed before the folding and by sealing the mattress in sealed packaging.

29 . The method of claim 27 , further comprising retaining the mattress in a folded state, the retaining in the folded state being performed after the folding.

30 . The method of claim 29 , wherein the retaining the mattress in the folded state includes one or more of inserting and sealing the mattress in additional packaging or banding the mattress.

31 . The method of claim 27 , wherein the folding is performed such that force is transferred from the upper surface to the other upper surface.

32 . A method of providing an adjustable bed system having a mattress with a head portion and a foot portion and having an adjustment mechanism that lifts the head portion from a first configuration in which a first upper surface of the head portion and a second upper surface of the foot portion are substantially coplanar to a second configuration in which first upper surface is inclined relative to the second upper surface, the method comprising:
inserting the adjustment mechanism into a cavity of the head portion of the mattress; and
after the inserting, folding the mattress such that an upper surface of the head portion faces another upper surface of the foot portion.

33 . The method of claim 32 , further comprising after the folding, retaining the mattress in a folded state.

34 . The method of claim 33 , wherein the retaining the mattress in the folded state includes one or more of inserting the mattress into a bag or banding the mattress.

35 . The method of claim 34 , wherein the retaining the mattress in the folded state is performed such that force is transferred between upper surfaces of the head portion and the foot portion of the mattress.

36 . The method of claim 32 , further comprising, before the folding, compressing the head portion and the foot portion of the mattress.

37 . The method of claim 36 , further comprising, after the compressing and before the folding, retaining the head portion and the foot portion in compressed states.

38 . The method of claim 37 , wherein the retaining includes vacuum sealing the adjustable bed system in packaging.

39 . The method of claim 37 , wherein the compressing includes compressing the head portion of the mattress a lesser distance than the foot portion of the mattress.

40 . A method of providing an adjustable bed system having a mattress with a head portion and a foot portion and having an adjustment mechanism that lifts the head portion from a first configuration in which a first upper surface of the head portion and a second upper surface of the foot portion are substantially coplanar and a second configuration in which first upper surface is inclined relative to the second upper surface, the method comprising:
inserting the adjustment mechanism into a cavity of the head portion of the mattress; compressing the head portion of the mattress a lesser distance than the foot portion of the mattress; after the inserting, compressing the head portion of the mattress a lesser distance than the foot portion of the mattress; after the inserting, retaining the head portion and the foot portion in compressed states by sealing the mattress in sealed packaging with the adjustment mechanism contained in the sealed packaging; after the retaining in compressed states, folding the mattress such that an upper surface of the head portion faces another upper surface of the foot portion; and after the folding, retaining the mattress in the folded state such that force is transferred between the upper surface and the other upper surface by one of inserting the mattress in additional packaging or banding.
