Abstract

Polymerizable acrylic monomers, and anaerobic adhesives which contain such monomers, wherein the acrylic monomers contain internal chain unsaturation in addition to terminal acrylic unsaturation.

Claims

exact text as granted — not AI-modified
I claim:

       1. An anaerobic adhesive composition, comprising: an acrylic monomer having the general formula: ##STR14## wherein R" is a member selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, chlorine, methyl and ethyl radicals; R 2 is an unsaturated divalent alkyl or substituted alkyl group of from 2-4 carbon atoms, or an unsaturated divalent carbocyclic aliphatic ring of from 4-9 carbon atoms; R is ##STR15## where p is an integer of from 0 to 2, q is an integer of from 1 to 3, R 1 is a member selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, methyl, ethyl, chloromethyl, methylol, phenyl, methoxyphenyl, methoxybutyl, methoxyallyl and ##STR16## radicals where R" is as previously defined, and X is a member selected from the group consisting of --O--, --NH-- and --NR'-- where R' is a benzyl radical or an alkyl group of from 1-4 carbon atoms; and Y is hydrogen, a metal, an amine ion, an ammonium ion, a guanidinium ion, or a short length carbon chain; said acrylic monomer being in combination with a metal activatable polymerization catalyst and a polymerization inhibitor.

       2. The anaerobic adhesive composition of claim 1 wherein R" is methyl, R 2 is --HC═CH-- and R is --CH 2 CH 2 O--.

       3. The anaerobic adhesive composition of claim 1 wherein said catalyst is an organic hydroperoxide catalyst, and said inhibitor is a quinone inhibitor, in further combination with a promoter selected from the group consisting of organic amines, imides, sulfimides, and mixtures thereof.

       4. The anaerobic adhesive composition of claim 1, blended with one or more polymerizable acrylic monomers.

       5. The anaerobic adhesive composition of claim 1, blended with one or more polymerizable acrylic monomers selected from the group consisting of hydroxyethyl methacrylate, hydroxypropyl methacrylate, trimethylolpropane trimethacrylate, dibromopropyl methacrylate, diethylene glycol dimethacrylate, triethylene glycol dimethacrylate, dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate, tetraethylene glycol dimethacrylate, dipropylene glycol dimethacrylate, methyl methacrylate, ethyl methacrylate, propyl methacrylate, polyethylene glycol dimethacrylate, di-(pentamethylene glycol) dimethyacrylate, n-butyl methacrylate, trimethylolpropane triacrylate, tetraethylene glycol diacrylate, isobutyl methacrylate, tetraethylene glycol di-(chloroacrylate), diglycerol diacrylate, diglycerol tetramethacrylate, butylene glycol dimethacrylate, ethylene glycol dimethacrylate, neopentyl glycol diacrylate, and tetrahydrofurural methacrylate.

       6. The anaerobic adhesive composition of claim 1, wherein q is 1.
