Meta-anilide and meta-anilide urea and urea salt herbicidal compounds and methods of use

Abstract

A compound having the structural formula <IMAGE> wherein R is selected from the group consisting of hydrogen and C1-C3 alkyl ammonium; R' is selected from the group consisting of C2-C8 alkyl, C1-C3 alkoxy, cyclopropyl, methacryl, C1-C3 alkylmercapto, methylamino, ethylamino, C2-C4 dialkylamino, C2-C4 alkylalkoxyamino; and n equals the integer 0 or 1; and its use as a herbicide and as a herbicide intermediate.

We claim: 
     
       1. A compound having the structural formula ##STR5## wherein R is selected from the group consisting of hydrogen and C 1  -C 3  alkyl ammonium; R' is selected from the group consisting of C 2  -C 8  alkyl, C 1  -C 3  alkoxy, cyclopropyl, methacryl, C 1  -C 3  alkylmercapto, methylamino, ethylamino, C 2  -C 4  dialkylamino, C 2  -C 4  alkylalkoxyamino; and n equals the integer 0 or 1. 
     
     
       2. The compound of claim 1 R is hydrogen, R' is methylamino and n is 0. 
     
     
       3. The compound of claim 1 wherein R is hydrogen, R' is ethyl and n is 0. 
     
     
       4. The compound of claim 1 wherein R is isopropyl ammonium, R' is methylamino and n is 0. 
     
     
       5. The compound of claim 1 wherein R is isopropyl ammonium, R' is ethyl and n is 0. 
     
     
       6. A herbicidal composition comprising an herbicidally effective amount of a compound having the structural formula ##STR6## wherein R is selected from the group consisting of hydrogen and C 1  -C 13  alkyl ammonium; R' is selected from the group consisting of C 2  -C 8  alkyl, C 1  -C 3  alkoxy, cyclopropyl, methacryl, C 1  -C 3  alkylmercapto, methylamino, ethylamino, C 2  -C 4  dialkylamino, C 2  -C 4  alkylalkoxyamino; and n equals the integer 0 or 1. 
     
     
       7. The method of controlling undesirable vegetation comprising applying to the area where control is desired, an herbicidally effective amount of a compound having the formula ##STR7## wherein R is selected from the group consisting of hydrogen and C 1  -C 3  alkyl ammonium; R' is selected from the group consisting of C 2  -C 8  alkyl, C 1  -C 3  alkoxy, cyclopropyl, methacryl, C 1  -C 3  alkylmercapto, methylamino, ethylamino, C 2  -C 4  dialkylamino, C 2  -C 4  alkylalkoxyamino; and n equals the integer 0 or 1. 
     
     
       8. The method of claim 7 R is hydrogen, R' is methylamino and n is 0. 
     
     
       9. The method of claim 7 wherein R is hydrogen, R' is ethyl and n is 0. 
     
     
       10. The method of claim 7 wherein R is isopropyl ammonium, R' is methylamino and n is 0. 
     
     
       11. The method of claim 7 wherein R is isopropyl ammonium, R' is ethyl and n is 0.
