Abstract

Potent, specific inhibitors of phospholipase A2 are disclosed which are compounds of the formula: <IMAGE> wherein A is R1CO2 or OH, B is R2CO2 or OH, D is R3CO2 or OH and C is R4CO2; and wherein R1, R2, and R3 and R4 are each C10-C30 alkyl groups comprising from about 0-3 double bonds.

What is claimed is: 
     
       1. A method for in vivo inhibition of phospholipase A 2  comprising administering to a mammal an effective amount of a compound of the formula; ##STR3## wherein A is R 1  CO 2  OH, B is R 2  CO 2  or OH, D is R 3  CO 2  or OH and C is R 4  CO 2  ; wherein R 1 , R 2 , R 3  and R 4  are each C 10  -C 30  alkyl groups comprising from about 0-3 double bonds; and wherein at least A, B or D is OH. 
     
     
       2. The method of claim 1 wherein each of R 1 , R 2 , R 3  and R 4  is a C 12  -C 22  alkyl group. 
     
     
       3. The method of claim 1 wherein B is OH, A is R 1  CO 2  and D is R 3  CO 2 . 
     
     
       4. The method of claim 3 wherein the compound is monolysocardiolipin. 
     
     
       5. The method of claim 1 wherein A is OH, B is R 2  CO 2  and D is R 3  CO 2 . 
     
     
       6. The method of claim 5 wherein the compound is isomono-lysocardiolipin. 
     
     
       7. The method of claim 1 wherein B is OH, A is R 1  CO 2  and D is OH. 
     
     
       8. The method of claim 7 wherein the compound is dilysocardiolipin.
