Abstract

Novel alkylcarbamylmethyl aminotriazines self-cure and also function as crosslinkers for compounds containing active hydrogen groups. When the active hydrogen-containing compounds are hydroxylated polymers, coatings are provided with exceptional resistance to detergent and salt-spray exposure and improved abrasion resistance. The novel aminotriazines also can be combined with fillers as binders which when cured provide shaped articles of manufacture, such as insulation and foundry core molds.

Claims

exact text as granted — not AI-modified
We claim:

       1. An article of manufacture comprising a filler, a cure catalyst, and active hydrogen-containing material; and a triazine compound, wherein the triazine compound is as follows: A triazine compound selected from (i) a triaminotriazine compound of the formula C 3 N 6 (CH 2 OR) 6-x (CH 2 NHCOOR 1 ) x , or; (ii) a benzoguanamine compound of the formula C 3 N 5 (C 6 H 5 ) (CH 2 OR) 4-y (CH 2 NHCOOR 1 ) y , or; (iii) an oligomer of (i) or (ii), wherein the R groups are, independently, hydrogen or alkyl from 1 to 12 carbon atoms, the R 1 groups are, independently, alkyl from 1 to 12 carbon atoms, x is in the range of from about 2 to about 6, and y is in the range of from about 2 to about 4.

       2. An article as defined in claim 1 wherein the triaminotriazine compound (i) has x in the range of from about 2.8 to about 6.

       3. An article as defined in claim 1 wherein the benzoguanamine compound (ii) has y in the range of from about 2.2 to about 4.

       4. An article as defiend in claim 1 wherein for the triaminotriazine compound (i) the R groups are, independently, one to twelve carbon atom lower alkyl and the R 1 groups are, independently, methyl, ethyl, n-propyl, butyl, isopropyl, n-octyl, 2-ethylhexyl, or n-octadecyl.

       5. An article as defined in claim 1 wherein for the benzoguanamine compound (ii) the R groups are, independently, one to twelve carbon atoms lower alkyl and the R 1 groups are, independently, methyl, ethyl, n-propyl, butyl, isopropyl, n-octyl, 2-ethylhexyl, or n-octadecyl.

       6. An article as defined in claim 1 wherein the triazine compound is an oligomer of a triaminotriazine compound of the formula: C.sub.3 N.sub.6 (CH.sub.2 OR).sub.6-x CH.sub.2 NHCOOR.sup.1).sub.x where the R is a C 1 to C 8 lower alkyl, and R 1 is methyl, ethyl, n-propyl, butyl, isopropyl, n-octyl, 2-ethylhexyl, n-octadecyl, and x is a number in the range of from about 2 to about 6.

       7. An article as defined in claim 1 wherein the triazine compound is an oligomer of a benzoguanamine compound of the formula: C.sub.3 N.sub.5 (C.sub.6 H.sub.5) (CH.sub.2 OR) .sub.4-y (CH.sub.2 NHCOOR.sup.1).sub.y where the R is a C 1 to C 8 lower alkyl, and R 1 is methyl, ethyl, n-propyl, butyl, isopropyl, n-octyl, 2-ethylhexyl, n-octadecyl, and y is a number in the range of from about 2 to about 4.
