Abstract

The present invention provides a method for treating or preventing certain metabolic disorders comprising the systemic administration of 3-guanidinopropionic acid.

I claim: 
     
       1. A method of treating excess adiposity in a patient experiencing excess adiposity comprising the systemic administration to said patient of an amount effective to treat excess adiposity of 3-guanidinopropionic acid or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof. 
     
     
       2. A method according to claim 1 wherein the mode of administration is oral. 
     
     
       3. A method according to claim 1 wherein said effective amount of 3-GPA ranges from 1-500 mg/kg/day. 
     
     
       4. A method according to claim 3 wherein said effective amount of 3-GPA ranges from 5-100 mg/kg/day. 
     
     
       5. A method of claim 1, wherein the 3-guanidinopropionic acid is administered to treat excess adiposity.
