Abstract
The present invention relates to a pyrimidine derivative having the formula ##STR1## (wherein the variables are defined in the full text of the patent), a method for producing the same, and its use as a herbicide.

A pyrimidine derivative having the formula, ##STR151## wherein each of R 1 and R 2 , which may be the same or different, is C 1 -C 6 alkyl, C 1 -C 6 alkoxy, halo C 1 -C 6 alkoxy or halogen; R 3 is hydrogen, C 1 -C 6 alkyl, phenyl or phenyl substituted with at least one member selected from the group consisting Of C 1 -C 6 alkyl, C 1 -C 6 alkoxy, halo C 1 -C 6 alkyl, C 1 -C 6 alkoxycarbonyl, nitro and halogen; each of R 4 and R 5 , which may be the same or different, is hydrogen, C 1 -C 6 alkyl, halo C 1 -C 6 alkyl, phenyl, phenyl substituted with at least one member selected from the group consisting of C 1 -C 6 alkyl, C 1 -C 6 alkoxy, halo C 1 -C 6 alkyl, C 1 -C 6 alkoxycarbonyl, nitro and halogen, benzyl, pyridyl, pyridyl substituted with at least one member selected from the group consisting of C 1 -C 6 alkyl, C 1 -C 6 alkoxy, halo C 1 -C 6 alkyl, C 1 -C 6 alkoxycarbonyl, nitro and halogen, quinolinyl, quinolinyl substituted with at least one member selected from the group consisting of C 1 -C 6 alkyl, C 1 -C 6 alkoxy, halo C 1 -C 6 alkyl, C 1 -C 6 alkoxycarbonyl, nitro and halogen, C 1 -C 6 alkylcarbonyl, C 1 -C 6 alkoxycarbonyl, and ##STR152## may be N ##STR153## wherein A 1 is C 4 -C 7 alkylene, C 4 -C 7 alkylene substituted with C 1 -C 6 alkyl, a group of the formula, (CH.sub.2).sub.q --A.sup.2 --(CH.sub.2).sub.r --, wherein A 2 is S, O, ##STR154## NR 9 , ##STR155## wherein R 9 is hydrogen, C 1 -C 6 alkyl, q and r are integer and satisfy the inequalities, 3≦q+r≦6, q≧1, r≧1, or a group of the formula, --(CH.sub.2).sub.q --A.sup.2 --(CH.sub.2).sub.r --, substituted with C 1 -C 6 alkyl wherein q, r and A 2 are as defined above; or a group of the formula, ##STR156## wherein A is C 2 -C 4 alkylene or C 2 -C 4 alkylene substituted with C 1 -C 6 alkyl, Or a group of the formula, ##STR157## wherein A is as defined above; X is oxygen or sulfur; Z is nitrogen or CY 4 ; each of Y 1 , Y 2 and Y 3 , which may be the same or different, is hydrogen, halogen, C 1 -C 6 alkyl or C 1 -C 6 alkoxy; and Y 4 is hydrogen, hydroxyl, mercapto, nitro, halogen, C 1 -C 6 alkyl, C 2 -C 6 alkenyl, C 2 -C 6 alkynyl, C 1 -C 6 alkoxy, C 3 -C 6 alkenyloxy, C 3 -C 6 alkynyloxy, halo C 1 -C 6 alkyl, halo C 2 -C 6 alkenyl, halo C 2 -C 6 alkynyl, halo C 1 -C 6 alkoxy, halo C 3 -C 6 alkenyloxy, halo C 3 -C 6 alkynyloxy, C 1 -C 6 alkoxy C 1 -C 6 alkyl, C 3 -C 6 alkenyloxy C 1 -C 6 alkyl, C 3 -C 6 alkynyloxy C 1 -C 6 alkyl, cyano, formyl, carboxyl, C 1 -C 6 alkoxycarbonyl, C 3 -C 6 alkenyloxycarbonyl, C 3 -C 6 alkynyloxycarbonyl, phenyl, phenyl substituted with at least one member selected from the group consisting of C 1 -C 6 alkyl, C 1 -C 6 alkoxy, halo C 1 -C 6 alkyl, C 1 -C 6 alkoxycarbonyl and halogen, phenoxy, phenoxy substituted with at least one member selected from the group consisting of C 1 -C 6 alkyl, C 1 -C 6 alkoxy, halo C 1 -C 6 alkyl, C 1 -C 6 alkoxycarbonyl and halogen, phenylthio, phenylthio substituted with at least one member selected from the group consisting of C 1 -C 6 alkyl, C 1 -C 6 alkoxy, halo C 1 -C 6 alkyl, C 1 -C 6 alkoxycarbonyl and halogen, benzyloxy, benzyloxy substituted with at least one member selected from the group consisting of C 1 -C 6 alkyl, C 1 -C 6 alkoxy, halo C 1 -C 6 alkyl, C 1 -C 6 alkoxycarbonyl and halogen, benzylthio, benzylthio substituted with at least one member selected from the group consisting of C 1 -C 6 alkyl, C 1 -C 6 alkoxy, halo C 1 -C 6 alkyl, C 1 -C 6 alkoxycarbonyl and halogen, ##STR158## wherein each of R 8 and R 6 , which may be the same or different, is hydrogen, C 1 -C 6 alkyl, C 3 -C 6 alkenyl or C 3 -C 6 alkynyl, ##STR159## wherein R 8 and R 6 are as defined above, ##STR160## wherein R 7 is C 1 -C 6 alkyl, C 3 -C 6 alkenyl or C 3 -C 6 alkynyl and m is an integer of 0, 1 or 2, ##STR161## wherein X 1 is oxygen or sulfur, and R 7 is as defined above, or ##STR162## wherein R 7 and m are as defined above, and n is an integer from 1 to 4.
2. A pyrimidine derivative according to claim 1, wherein each of R 1 and R 2 , which may be the same or different, is C 1 -C 6 alkoxy.
3. A pyrimidine derivative according to claim 1, wherein both R 1 and R 2 are methoxy.
4. A pyrimidine derivative accodring to claim 1, wherein Z is nitrogen or CY 5 wherein Y 5 is hydrogen, halogen, halo C 1 -C 6 alkyl, C 1 -C 6 alkyl, C 1 -C 6 alkoxy, phenyl or phenyl substituted with at least one member selected from the group consisting of C 1 -C 6 alkyl, C 1 -C 6 alkoxy, halo C 1 -C 6 alkyl, C 1 -C 6 alkoxycarbonyl and halogen.
5. A pyrimidine derivative according to claim 1, wherein Z is nitrogen, CH, CF, CCl, CBr or CI.
6. A pyrimidine derivative according to claim 2, wherein Z is CF, CCl, CBr or CI.
7. A pyrimidine derivative according to claim 1, wherein both Y 1 and Y 2 are hydrogen or fluorine, and Y 3 is hydrogen, fluorine or C 1 -C 6 alkoxy.
8. A pyrimidine derivative according to claim 4, wherein both R 1 and R 2 are methoxy, and X is oxygen.
9. A pyrimidine derivative according to claim 1, wherein it is 3-{2-(4,6-dimethoxypyrimidin-2-yl)oxybenzoyl}amino-2-oxazolidinone of the formula, ##STR163##
10. A pyrimidine derivative according to claim 1, wherein it is 3-{2-chloro-6-(4,6-dimethoxypyrimidin-2-yl)oxybenzoyl}amino-2-oxazolidinone of the formula, ##STR164##
11. A method for producing a pyrimidine derivative which comprises the steps of (i) reacting a carboxylic acid derivative having the formula, ##STR165## wherein X is oxygen or sulfur; Z is nitrogen or CY 4 ; each of Y 1 , Y 2 and Y 3 , which may be the same or different, is hydrogen, halogen, C 1 -C 6 alkyl or C 1 -C 6 alkoxy; Y 4 is hydrogen, hydroxyl, mercapto, nitro, halogen, C 1 -C 6 alkyl, C 2 -C 6 alkenyl, C 2 -C 6 alkynyl, C 1 -C 6 alkoxy, C 3 -C 6 alkenyloxy, C 3 -C 6 alkynyloxy, halo C 1 -C 6 alkyl, halo C 2 -C 6 alkenyl, halo C 2 -C 6 alkynyl, halo C 1 -C 6 alkoxy, halo C 3 -C 6 alkenyloxy, halo C 3 -C 6 alkynyloxy, C 1 -C 6 alkoxy C 1 -C 6 alkyl, C 3 -C 6 alkenyloxy C 1 -C 6 alkyl, C 1 -C 6 alkynyloxy C 1 -C 6 alkyl, cyano, formyl, carboxyl, C 1 -C 6 alkoxycarbonyl, C 3 -C 6 alkenyloxycarbonyl, C 3 -C 6 alkynyloxycarbonyl, phenyl, phenyl substituted with at least one member selected from the group consisting of C 1 -C 6 alkyl, C 1 -C 6 alkoxy, halo C 1 -C 6 alkyl, C 1 -C 6 alkoxycarbonyl and halogen, phenoxy, phenoxy substituted with at least one member selected from the group consisting of C 1 -C 6 alkyl, C 1 -C 6 alkoxy, halo C 1 -C 6 alkyl, C 1 -C 6 alkoxycarbonyl and halogen, phenylthio, phenylthio substituted with at least one member selected from the group consisting of C 1 -C 6 alkyl, C 1 -C 6 alkoxy, halo C 1 -C 6 alkyl, C 1 -C 6 alkoxycarbonyl and halogen, benzyloxy, benzyloxy substituted with at least one member selected from the group consisting of C 1 -C 6 alkyl, C 1 -C 6 alkoxy, halo C 1 -C 6 alkyl, C 1 -C 6 alkoxycarbonyl and halogen, benzylthio, benzylthio substituted with at least one member selected from the group consisting of C 1 -C 6 alkyl, C 1 -C 6 alkoxy, halo C 1 -C 6 alkyl, C 1 -C 6 alkoxycarbonyl and halogen, ##STR166## wherein each of R 8 and R 6 , which may be the same or different, is hydrogen, C 1 -C 6 alkyl, C 3 -C 6 alkenyl or C 3 -C 6 alkynyl, ##STR167## wherein R 8 and R 6 are as defined above, ##STR168## wherein R 7 is C 1 -C 6 alkyl, C 3 -C 6 alkenyl or C 3 -C 6 alkynyl and m is an integer of 0, 1 or 2, ##STR169## wherein X 1 is oxygen or sulfur, and R 7 is as defined above, or ##STR170## wherein R 7 and m are as defined above, and n is an integer of from 1 to 4; and each of R 1 and R 2 , which may be the same or different, is C 1 -C 6 alkyl, C 1 -C 6 alkoxy, halo C 1 -C 6 alkoxy or halogen, with an acid-halogenating agent or an active esterifying agent to obtain a reaction product; and (ii) reacting the reaction product with a hydrazine derivative having the formula, ##STR171## wherein R 3 is hydrogen, C 1 -C 6 alkyl, phenyl or phenyl substituted with at least one member selected from the group consisting of C 1 -C 6 alkyl, C 1 -C 6 alkoxy, halo C 1 -C 6 alkyl, C 1 -C 6 alkoxycarbonyl, nitro and halogen; each of R 4 and R 5 , which may be the same or different, is hydrogen, C 1 -C 6 alkyl, halo C 1 -C 6 alkyl, phenyl, phenyl substituted with at least one member selected from the group consisting of C 1 -C 6 alkyl, C 1 -C 6 alkoxy, halo C 1 -C 6 alkyl, C 1 -C 6 alkoxycarbonyl, nitro and halogen, benzyl, pyridyl, pyridyl substituted with at least one member selected from the group consisting of C 1 -C 6 alkyl, C 1 -C 6 alkoxy, halo C 1 -C 6 alkyl, C 1 -C 6 alkoxycarbonyl, nitro and halogen, quinolinyl, quinolinyl substituted with at least one member selected from the group consisting of C 1 -C 6 alkyl, C 1 -C 6 alkoxy, halo C 1 -C 6 alkyl, C 1 -C 6 alkoxycarbonyl, nitro and halogen, C 1 -C 6 alkylcarbonyl, C 1 -C 6 alkoxycarbonyl, and ##STR172## may be ##STR173## wherein A 1 is C 4 -C 7 alkylene, C 4 -C 7 alkylene substituted with C 1 -C 6 alkyl, a group of the formula, --(CH.sub.2).sub.q --A.sup.2 --(CH.sub.2).sub.r --, wherein A 2 is S, O, ##STR174## NR 9 , ##STR175## wherein R 9 is hydrogen, C 1 -C 6 alkyl, q and r are integer and satisfy the inequalities, 3≦q+r≦6, q≧1, r≧1, or a group of the formula, --(CH.sub.2).sub.q --A.sup.2 --(CH.sub.2).sub.r --, substituted with C 1 -C 6 alkyl wherein q, r and A 2 are as defined above; or a group of the formula, ##STR176## wherein A is C 2 -C 4 alkylene or C 2 -C 4 alkylene substituted with C 1 -C 6 , or a group of the formula, ##STR177## wherein A is as defined above.
12. A herbicidal composition which comprises as an active ingredient a herbicidally effective amount of a pyrimidine derivative having the formula, ##STR178## wherein each of R 1 and R 2 , which may be the same or different, is C 1 -C 6 alkyl, C 1 -C 6 alkoxy, halo C 1 -C 6 alkoxy or halogen: R 3 is hydrogen, C 1 -C 6 alkyl, phenyl or phenyl substituted with at least one member selected from the group consisting of C 1 -C 6 alkyl, C 1 -C 6 alkoxy, halo C 1 -C 6 alkyl, C 1 -C 6 alkoxycarbonyl, nitro and halogen; each of R 4 and R 5 , which may be the same or different, is hydrogen, C 1 -C 6 alkyl, halo C 1 -C 6 alkyl, phenyl, phenyl substituted with at least one member selected from the group consisting of C 1 -C 6 alkyl, C 1 -C 6 alkoxy, halo C 1 -C 6 alkyl, C 1 -C 6 alkoxycarbonyl, nitro and halogen, benzyl, pyridyl, pyridyl substituted with at least one member selected from the group consisting of C 1 -C 6 alkyl, C 1 -C 6 alkoxy, halo C 1 -C 6 alkyl, C 1 -C 6 alkoxycarbonyl, nitro and halogen, quinolinyl, quinolinyl substituted with at least one member selected from the group consisting of C 1 -C 6 alkyl, C 1 -C 6 alkoxy, halo C 1 -C 6 alkyl, C 1 -C 6 alkoxycarbonyl, nitro and halogen, C 1 -C 6 alkylcarbonyl, C 1 -C 6 alkoxycarbonyl, and ##STR179## may be ##STR180## wherein A 1 is C 4 -C 7 alkylene, C 4 -C 7 alkylene substituted with C 1 -C 6 alkyl, a group of the formula, --(CH.sub.2).sub.q --A.sup.2 --(CH.sub.2).sub.r --, wherein A 2 is S, O, ##STR181## NR 9 , ##STR182## wherein R 9 is hydrogen, C 1 -C 6 alkyl, q and r are integer and satisfy the inequalities, 3≦q+r≦6, q≧1, r≧1, or a group of the formula, --(CH.sub.2).sub.q --A.sup.2 --(CH.sub.2).sub.r --, substituted with C 1 -C 6 alkyl wherein q, r and A 2 are as defined above; or a group of the formula, ##STR183## wherein A is C 2 -C 4 alkylene or C 2 -C 4 alkylene substituted with C 1 -C 6 alkyl, or a group of the formula, ##STR184## wherein A is as defined above; X is oxygen or sulfur; Z is nitrogen or CY 4 ; each of Y 1 , Y 2 and Y 3 , which may be the same or different, is hydrogen, halogen, C 1 -C 6 alkyl or C 1 -C 6 alkoxy; and Y 4 is hydrogen, hydroxyl, mercapto, nitro, halogen, C 1 -C 6 alkyl, C 2 -C 6 alkenyl, C 2 -C 6 alkynyl, C 1 -C 6 alkoxy, C 3 -C 6 alkenyloxy, C 3 -C 6 alkynyloxy, halo C 1 -C 6 alkyl, halo C 2 -C 6 alkenyl, halo C 2 -C 6 alkynyl, halo C 1 -C 6 alkoxy, halo C 3 -C 6 alkenyloxy, halo C 3 -C 6 alkynyloxy, C 1 -C 6 alkoxy C 1 -C 6 alkyl, C 3 -C 6 alkenyloxy C 1 -C 6 alkyl, C 3 -C 6 alkynyloxy C 1 -C 6 alkyl, cyano, formyl, carboxyl, C 1 -C 6 alkoxycarbonyl, C 3 -C 6 alkenyloxycarbonyl, C 3 -C 6 alkynyloxycarbonyl, phenyl, phenyl substituted with at least one member selected from the group consisting of C 1 -C 6 alkyl, C 1 -C 6 alkoxy, halo C 1 -C 6 alkyl, C 1 -C 6 alkoxycarbonyl and halogen, phenoxy, phenoxy substituted with at least one member selected from the group consisting of C 1 -C 6 alkyl, C 1 -C 6 alkoxy, halo C 1 -C 6 alkyl, C 1 -C 6 alkoxycarbonyl and halogen, phenylthio, phenylthio substituted with at least one member selected from the group consisting of C 1 -C 6 alkyl, C 1 -C 6 alkoxy, halo C 1 -C 6 alkyl, C 1 -C 6 alkoxycarbonyl and halogen, benzyloxy, benzyloxy substituted with at least one member selected from the group consisting of C 1 -C 6 alkyl, C 1 -C 6 alkoxy, halo C 1 -C 6 alkyl, C 1 -C 6 alkoxycarbonyl and halogen, benzylthio, benzylthio substituted with at least one member selected from the group consisting of C 1 -C 6 alkyl, C 1 -C 6 alkoxy, halo C 1 -C 6 alkyl, C 1 -C 6 alkoxycarbonyl and halogen, ##STR185## wherein each of R 8 and R 6 , which may be the same or different, is hydrogen, C 1 -C 6 alkyl, C 3 -C 6 alkenyl or C 3 -C 6 alkynyl, ##STR186## wherein R 8 and R 6 are as defined above, ##STR187## wherein R 7 is C 1 -C 6 alkyl, C 3 -C 6 alkenyl or C 3 -C 6 alkynyl and m is an integer of 0, 1 or 2, ##STR188## wherein X 1 is oxygen or sulfur, and R 7 is as defined above, or ##STR189## wherein R 7 and m are as defined above, and n is an integer of from 1 to 4; and an inert carrier or a diluent.
