Abstract

A side-chain liquid crystalline polymer containing crown ether based mesogens having the following structure <IMAGE> (I) wherein the polymer backbone is at least partially grafted by the crown ether based mesogens with oligo(methylene) or oligo(oxyethylene) spacers.

What is claimed is: 
     
       1. A side-chain liquid crystalline polymer containing crown ether based mesogens having the following structure ##STR10## wherein: the polymer backbone, having a number average molecular weight of 400-15,000, is siloxane copolymer; the spacer is --(CH 2 ) m  --, wherein m is an integer from 1-12, or --(OCH 2  CH 2 ) i  --, wherein i is an integer from 1-4; and   the crown ether based mesogen which is connected to the polymer backbone with the spacer is ##STR11##  wherein n is an integer of 0-3.   
     
     
       2. The polymer of claim 1, wherein n is 2. 
     
     
       3. The polymer of claim 1, wherein m is an integer from 3-9.
