Claims

Abstract

Fibrous cellulose materials useful in the manufacture of soft, absorbent paper products such as paper towels, facial tissues, and toilet tissue are disclosed. The paper products contain a vegetable oil based quaternary ammonium chemical softening compound. Examples of preferred vegetable oil based quaternary ammonium chemical softening compounds include diester di(oleyl)dimethyl ammonium chloride (DEDODMAC) (i.e., di(octadec-z-9-eneoyloxyethyl)dimethyl ammonium chloride) derived from canola oil and/or high oleic safflower oil. Variables that need to be adjusted to maximize the fluidity of vegetable oil based acyl groups include the cis/trans isomer ratio or the Iodine Value (IV) of the fatty acyl groups. The tissue softness is further enhanced by controlling the purity of the fatty acyl groups and the di-substituted versus mono-substituted long chain hydrocarbyl substituent ratio in the quaternary ammonium compounds.

What is claimed is: 
     
       1. A soft paper product comprising: (a) cellulose paper making fibers; and   (b) from about 0.005% to about 5.0% by weight of said cellulose paper making fibers of a quaternary ammonium softening compound having the formula:   (R) 4-m  -- N +  --(CH 2 ) q  --(N + ) p  !-- (CH 2 ) n  --(Y) r  --R 2  ! m  (X - ) p+1     wherein each Y is --O--(O)C--, or --C(O)--O--, or --NH--C(O)--, or --C(O)--NH--;   m is 1 to 3;   n is 0 to 4;   p is 0 to 1;   q is 0 to 4;   r is 0 to 1;   q≧p;   n≧r;   each R is a C 1  -C 6  alkyl group, hydroxyalkyl group, benzyl group, or mixtures thereof;   each R 2  is a C 13  -C 23  hydrocarbyl or substituted hydrocarbyl substituent; and X -  is any softener-compatible anion;   wherein the R 2  portion of the softening compound is derived from C 14  -C 24  fatty acyl groups having an Iodine Value of from 105 to about 180, wherein said fatty acyl groups have a cis/trans isomer weight ratio greater than about 80:20, and wherein the majority of said fatty acyl groups are derived from vegetable oil sources.   
     
     
       2. The paper product according to claim 1 wherein the majority of (Y) r  --R 2  comprises fatty acyls containing at least about 60% C 18  chain length. 
     
     
       3. The paper product according to claim 2 wherein the majority of (Y) r  --R 2  comprises fatty acyls containing at least about 90% C 18  chain length. 
     
     
       4. The paper product according to claim 3 wherein the majority of the C 18  fatty acyls are derived from oleic acid. 
     
     
       5. The paper product according to claim 1 wherein the majority of (Y) r  --R 2  comprises fatty acyls containing at least about 60% C 22  chain length. 
     
     
       6. The paper product according to claim 5 wherein the majority of (Y) r  --R 2  comprises fatty acyls containing at least about 90% C 22  chain length. 
     
     
       7. The paper product according to claim 1 wherein m=1 or m=2, and wherein the ratio of m=2 to m=1 is greater than about 10:1. 
     
     
       8. The paper product according to claim 1 further comprising from about 0005% to about 3.0% by weight of a wetting agent. 
     
     
       9. The paper product according to claim 8 wherein said wetting agent is a water soluble polyhydroxy compound. 
     
     
       10. The paper product according to claim 8 wherein said wetting agent is a linear alkoxylated alcohol or linear alkyl phenoxylated alcohol. 
     
     
       11. The paper product according to claim 1 wherein each R is a C 1  -C 3  alkyl group. 
     
     
       12. The paper product according to claim 11 wherein each R is a methyl group. 
     
     
       13. The paper product according to claim 1 wherein m=2, n=2, p=0, q=0, and r=1. 
     
     
       14. The paper product according to claim 1 wherein m=2, n=2, p=1, q=2, and r=1. 
     
     
       15. The paper product according to claim 1 wherein said fatty acyl groups have a cis/trans isomer weight ratio greater than about 90:10. 
     
     
       16. The paper product according to claim 7 wherein the ratio of m=2 to m=1 is greater than about 20:1. 
     
     
       17. The paper product according to claim 11 wherein X -  is selected from the group consisting of chloride, acetate, methyl sulfate, and mixtures thereof. 
     
     
       18. The paper product according to claim 3 wherein the majority of said vegetable oil based fatty acyl groups are derived from olive oil. 
     
     
       19. The paper product according to claim 3 wherein the majority of said vegetable oil based fatty acyl groups are derived from canola oil. 
     
     
       20. The paper product according to claim 3 wherein the majority of said vegetable oil based fatty acyl groups are derived from high oleic safflower oil. 
     
     
       21. The paper product according to claim 3 wherein the majority of said vegetable oil based fatty acyl groups are derived from rapeseed oil. 
     
     
       22. The paper product according to claim 6 wherein the majority of said vegetable oil based fatty acyl groups are derived from meadow foam oil. 
     
     
       23. The paper product according to claim 13 wherein Y is --O--(O)--C--, or --C(O)--O-- and R 2  is derived from canola oil. 
     
     
       24. The paper product according to claim 1 wherein said paper product is a paper towel. 
     
     
       25. The paper product according to claim 1 wherein said paper product is a facial tissue. 
     
     
       26. The paper product according to claim 1 wherein said paper product is a bath tissue.
