Antiperspirant actives and formulations made therefrom

Abstract

The present invention comprises stabilizing aqueous solutions of aluminum zirconium based salts with a water soluble amino acid, especially glycine, wherein the Zr:glycine weight ratios used to form solutions of the active itself or used to form cosmetic compositions made according to this invention are in the range from 1:1.2 to 1:5, particularly 1:2 to 1:4, and more particularly in the range of 1:2 to 1:3 on a weight:weight basis. By reducing the polymerization of small zirconium species with an elevated amount of amino acid(s), the efficacy of the antiperspirant salt is maintained.

What is claimed is: 
     
       1. A stabilized aluminum zirconium composition having an aqueous component and formed with a water soluble amino acid in an amount in the range of 1:1.2-1:5 of zirconium:amino acid on a weight:weight basis. 
     
     
       2. A stabilized aluminum zirconium composition according to claim 1 wherein the composition is formed with an amino acid in an amount in the range of 1:1.2-1:4. 
     
     
       3. A stabilized aluminum zirconium composition according to claim 1 wherein the composition is formed with an amino acid in an amount in the range of 1:2-1:3. 
     
     
       4. A stabilized aluminum zirconium composition according to claim 1 wherein the composition is formed with an aluminum zirconium salt suitable for use in an underarm product. 
     
     
       5. A stabilized aluminum zirconium composition according to claim 1 wherein the aluminum zirconium salt is selected from the group consisting of: (a) aluminum zirconium tetrachlorohydrex salts;   (b) aluminum zirconium trichlorohydrex salts;   (c) aluminum zirconium octachlorohydrex salts;   (d) aluminum zirconium pentachlorohydrex salts; and   (e) corresponding nitrate, bromide and sulfate salts of any of (a)-(d).   
     
     
       6. A stabilized aluminum zirconium composition according to claim 1 wherein the amino acid is selected from the group consisting of glycine, alanine, threonine and leucine. 
     
     
       7. A stabilized aluminum zirconium composition according to claim 1 wherein the composition is formed with a glycine salt. 
     
     
       8. A stabilized aluminum zirconium composition according to claim 1 wherein the amino acid is glycine. 
     
     
       9. A stabilized aluminum zirconium composition according to claim 7 wherein the composition is formed with an aluminum zirconium glycine salt, said salt having an initial Zr:amino acid ratio of less than 1:1.2, whereafter additional amino acid is added to a solution of the salt. 
     
     
       10. A stabilized aluminum zirconium composition according to claim 7 wherein the composition is formed with a Zr:amino acid ratio of 1:1.2-1:4. 
     
     
       11. A stabilized aluminum zirconium composition according to claim 10 wherein the composition is formed with a Zr:amino acid ratio of 1:2-1:3. 
     
     
       12. A stabilized aluminum zirconium composition according to claim 1 wherein the amino acid is added during the manufacture of an aluminum zirconium salt and prior to the isolation of the aluminum zirconium salt. 
     
     
       13. A deodorant product comprising a stabilized aluminum zirconium composition wherein said composition is made according to any one of claims 1-12. 
     
     
       14. An antiperspirant product comprising a stabilized aluminum zirconium composition wherein said composition is made according to any one of claims 1-12. 
     
     
       15. A cosmetic composition for reducing body malodor comprising a stabilized aluminum zirconium composition wherein (1) the stabilized aluminum zirconium composition is made according to any one of claims 1-12, and (2) the composition for reducing body malodor is in the form of a stick, gel cream, roll-on, soft solid or spray. 
     
     
       16. A stabilized aluminum zirconium composition having an aqueous component and formed with an amino acid in an amount in the range of 1:1.2-1:5 of zirconium: amino acid on a weight:weight basis wherein said composition is in the form of an aqueous solution. 
     
     
       17. A stabilized aluminum zirconium composition according to claim 16 wherein the aluminum zirconium composition added to the aqueous solution is in the range of 10-25% by weight based on the total weight of the solution. 
     
     
       18. A stabilized aluminum zirconium composition according to claim 1 wherein at least one ingredient selected from the group comprising: cetyltrimethyl ammonium chloride, polysorbate 20, sodium lauryl sulfate, cocamidopropyl hydroxysultaine, dimethicone copolyols and polyether ethoxylates is added to the stabilized aluminum zirconium composition or an aqueous solution made with the stabilized aluminum zirconium composition.
