Abstract
The invention provides arginine deiminase polypeptides and DNA (RNA) encoding arginine deiminase polypeptides and methods for producing such polypeptides by recombinant techniques. Also provided are methods for utilizing arginine deiminase polypeptides to screen for antibacterial compounds.

1. An isolated polynucleotide fragment comprising a first polynucleotide sequence or the full complement of the entire length of the first polynucleotide sequence, wherein the first polynucleotide sequence encodes an arginine deiminase polypeptide comprising SEQ ID NO:2.
2. The isolated polynucleotide fragment of claim 1 , wherein the isolated polynucleotide fragment comprises the first polyleotide sequence.
3. A vector comprising the isolated polynucleotide fragment of claim 2 .
4. An isolated host cell comp sing the vector of claim 3 .
5. A process for producing an arginine deiminase polypeptide comprising culturing the host cell of claim 4 under conditions sufficient for the production of the polypeptide, wherein the polypeptide is encoded by the first polynucleotide sequence.
6. The isolated polynucleotide fragment of claim 1 , wherein the isolated polynucleotide fragment comprises the fuill complement of the entire length of the first polynucleotide sequence.
7. A vector comprising the isolated polynucleotide fragment of claim 6 .
8. An isolated host cell comprising the vector of claim 7 .
9. The isolated polynucleotide fragment of claim 7 encoding a fusion polypeptide, wherein the flsion polypeptide comprises SEQ ID NO:2.
10. An isolated polynucleotidc fragment encoding arginine deiminase comprising a first polynucleotde sequence or the full complement of the entire length of the first polynucleotide sequence, wherein the first polynucleotide sequence comprises SEQ ID NO:1.
11. The isolated polynucleotide fragment of claim 10 , wherein the isolated polynucleotide fragment comprises the first polynucleotide sequence.
12. A vector comprising the isolated polynucleotide fragment of claim 11 .
13. An isolated host cell comprising the vector of claim 12 .
14. A process for producing an arginine deiminase polypeptide comprising culturing the host cell of claim 13 under conditions sufficient for the production of the polypeptide, wherein the polypeptide is encoded by the first polynuclcotide sequence.
15. The isolated polynucleotide fragment of claim 10 , wherein the isolated polynucleotide fragment comprises the full complement of the entire length of the first polynucleotide sequence.
16. A vector comprising the isolated polynucleotide fragment of claim 15 .
17. An isolated host cell comprising the vector of claim 16 .
18. The isolated polynuclcotide fragment of claim 11 encoding a fusion polypeptide, wherein the fusion polypeptide comprises SEQ ID NO:2.
19. An isolated polynuclcotide fragment comprising a first polynucleotide sequence or the full complement of the entire length of the first polynucleotide sequence, wherein the first polynucleotide sequence encodes an arginine deiminase polypeptide consisting of SEQ ID NO:2.
20. The isolated polynucleotide fragment of claim 19 , wherein the isolated polynucleotide fragment comprises the first polynucleotide sequence.
21. A vector comprising the isolated polynucleotide fragment of claim 20 .
22. An isolated host cell comprising the vector of claim 21 .
23. A process for producing an arginine deiminase polypeptide comprising culturing the host cell of claim 22 under conditions sufficient for the production of the polypeptide, wherein the polypeptide is encoded by the fist polynucleotide sequence.
24. The isolated polynucleotide fragment of claim 19 , wherein the isolated polynucleotide fragment comprises the full complement of the entire length of the first polynucleotide sequence.
25. A vector comprising the isolated polynucleotide fragment of claim 24 .
