Abstract
A golf club iron having a thin front face supported by a biasly bent U-shaped insert that is inserted into a rear cavity and sole recess of the iron to not only support the front face and to create a “spring like” effect, but to create a void between the insert and the front face and sole portion of the club head. The coefficient of restitution of the club head is greater than 0.8. The insert has a lower specific gravity and a higher Young's Modulus than the front face.
Claims
exact text as granted — not AI-modified1. A golf club head comprising:
a body including a front face, a perimeter weight surrounding the front face to define a rear cavity;
the perimeter weight having a sole portion with a sole recess defined therein;
a U-shaped rear cavity insert biasly interposed within the rear cavity and the sole recess such that a void is created between the insert and a portion of the back surface of the front face and a top surface of the sole portion,
wherein the U-shaped rear cavity insert is juxtaposed against at least 50 percent of the back surface of the front face so as to create a force and provide support inside the cavity for at least 50 percent of the front face.
2. The golf club head of claim 1 , wherein the coefficient of restitution of the golf club head is greater than 0.79.
3. The golf club head of claim 1 , wherein the rear cavity insert is a composite laminated sheet of one or more layers.
4. The golf club head of claim 1 , wherein prior to insertion the rear cavity insert has an angle that is at least 2% larger than the bend angle.
5. A golf club head comprising:
a body including a front face, a perimeter weight surrounding the front face to define a rear cavity;
the perimeter weight having a sole portion with a sole recess defined therein;
a U-shaped rear cavity insert biasly interposed within the rear cavity and the sole recess such that a void is created between the insert and a portion of the back surface of the front face and a top surface of the sole portion,
wherein the rear cavity insert exerts a pre-load force against at least 50 percent of the back surface of the front face inside the cavity of between 0–3000 lbs.
6. A set of golf club irons comprising:
a body including a front face and a perimeter weight surrounding the front face to define a rear cavity;
the perimeter weight having a sole portion with a sole recess defined therein;
a U-shaped rear cavity insert biasly bent within the sole recess and the rear cavity so as to create a void between the insert and a back surface of the front face and a top surface of the sole portion; and
wherein the rear cavity insert is juxtaposed against at a substantial portion of the back surface inside the cavity of the front face and against a portion of the wall of the sole cavity so as to create a force and provide support for a substantial portion of the front face.
7. The set of golf club irons of claim 6 , wherein the coefficient of restitution of each golf club iron in the set is greater than 0.79.
8. The set of golf club irons of claim 6 , wherein the rear cavity insert is a composite laminated sheet of one or more layers.Cited by (0)
