1. A method of treating ulcerative colitis in a patient suffering therefrom, comprising: administering an effective amount of compound (1)

or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt or an ester thereof.

       2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the compound is administered orally.

       3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the dosage form is a tablet or capsule.

       4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the compound is present in polymorphic Form A and is substantially free of other polymorphic forms.

       5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the compound is administered in a liquid.

       6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the dose is from 250 to 2,500 mg/day, divided into one, two or three portions.

       7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the compound is present as orthorhombic crystals.

       8. The method of claim 1 , further comprising administration of compound (2)

or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt or an ester thereof.

       9. A method of treating ulcerative colitis in a patient suffering therefrom, comprising: administering an effective amount of compound (2)
