Abstract

A bi-directional pocket member that retains a stump cutter tooth. The pocket affixes to a selected wheel side surface of a driven wheel, which has a first wheel side surface and a second wheel side surface. The pocket member has a pocket body, which has a first pocket edge, a second pocket edge, a first pocket side surface, a second pocket side surface, a radial inward pocket portion and an integral radial outward pocket portion. The radial inward pocket portion contains attachment bores used to operatively attach the pocket member to the driven wheel. The radial outward portion contains a retention bore used to retain the stump cutter tooth.

Claims

exact text as granted — not AI-modified
What is claimed is:

       1. A pocket member for retaining a stump cutter tooth to a selected side of a driven wheel, the pocket member comprising:
 a main body portion having a mounting surface disposed in a first plane;
 the main body portion containing a first mounting aperture having a first mounting axis being generally perpendicular to the mounting surface, and the main body further containing a second mounting aperture having a second mounting axis generally perpendicular to the mounting surface; and
 a tooth support body portion projecting from the main body portion, and the tooth support body portion containing a tooth retention bore having a longitudinal axis that is generally parallel to the first plane;
 the tooth support body portion having a first tooth support surface generally transverse to the tooth retention bore and a second tooth support surface generally transverse to the tooth retention bore; and wherein a working axis being defined by a line passing through a first point at the intersection of the first mounting axis and the first plane and the second mounting axis and the first plane; a support axis being perpendicular to the working axis and intersecting the working axis at a point mid-way between the first point and the second point; and the first tooth support surface being offset from the support axis by a first offset distance and the second tooth support surface being offset from the support axis by a second offset distance.

       2. The pocket member according to claim 1 wherein the first mounting aperture being a threaded bore, and the first mounting aperture being different from the second mounting aperture.

       3. The pocket member according to claim 2 wherein the first mounting aperture having a pair of sections of different dimensions, and the first mounting aperture being different from the second mounting aperture.

       4. The pocket member according to claim 3 wherein the first mounting aperture being in alignment with the second mounting aperture.

       5. The pocket member according to claim 4 wherein the first mounting aperture being in alignment with the second mounting aperture along a line generally parallel to the first plane.

       6. The pocket member according to claim 1 wherein the first and second offset distances are substantially the same.

       7. The pocket member according to claim 1 being attached to the selected side of the driven wheel, and a second pocket member identical to the first said pocket member disposed on an opposite side of the driven wheel, the second pocket member being operatively attached to the first said pocket member with a first retainer disposed through the first mounting aperture of the first said pocket member and through the second mounting aperture of the second pocket member, and a second retainer disposed through the first mounting aperture of the second pocket member and through the second mounting aperture of the first pocket member.

       8. The apparatus of claim 7 wherein a tooth is disposed respectively in the tooth retention bore of each of the first and second pocket members.

       9. An apparatus for retaining a stump cutter tooth to a driven wheel with a first pocket member on one side of the driven wheel and a second pocket member disposed on the other side of the driven wheel and first and second retainers passing through respective first and second pocket members and the driven wheel, wherein both the first and second pocket members are identical, each comprising a main body with a first retainer aperture and a second retainer aperture that is different than the first retainer aperture, and wherein the first and second retainers have a first end and a second end and the first retainer aperture of the first pocket member is configured for operative engagement with a first end of the first retainer and the second retainer aperature of the second pocket member is configured for operative engagement with a second end of the first retainer.

       10. The apparatus of claim 9 wherein the first retainer aperture of the second pocket member is configured for operative engagement with the first end of the second retainer and the second retainer aperture of the first pocket member is configured for operative engagement with the second end of the second retainer.
