Abstract

An apparatus is provided for charging a Universal Serial Bus (USB) device according to an optimal charging mode. The apparatus includes a charging module that is configured to obtain a descriptor from the USB device upon detection of the USB device on a USB bus. The charging module includes one or more descriptor entries disposed in a memory and a controller. The one or more descriptor entries include descriptor data, for matching the descriptor to a specific descriptor entry, and charging data, that specifies the optimal charging mode for the USB device. The controller is coupled to the memory, and is configured to match the descriptor to the specific descriptor entry, and is configured to initiate the optimal charging mode on the USB bus according to the charging data.

Claims

exact text as granted — not AI-modified
What is claimed is:

       1. An apparatus for charging a defective Universal Serial Bus (USB) device according to an optimal charging mode, the apparatus comprising:
 a charging module, configured to obtain a descriptor of the defective USB device upon detection of the defective USB device on a USB bus, the charging module comprising:
 a memory, storing one or more descriptor entries, the one or more descriptor entries comprising:
 descriptor data, being arranged for matching the descriptor to a specific descriptor entry;
 charging data, being arranged for specifying the optimal charging mode for the USB device; and
 defect data, being arranged to indicate commands to be transmitted to the defective USB device to control internal hardware states in order to force a power saving state; and

 a controller, coupled to said memory, configured to compare the descriptor to the specific descriptor entry, and configured to initiate the optimal charging mode on the USB bus according to the charging data, wherein the charging module is disposed within a USB hub, and wherein the USB hub is coupled to a USB host, and wherein the charging module issues a reset command to be transmitted to the defective USB device after obtaining the descriptor, thereby allowing for normal enumeration procedures by the USB host.

       2. The apparatus as recited in claim 1 , wherein the charging module obtains the descriptor by causing a descriptor read command to be transmitted to the defective USB device over the USB bus.

       3. The apparatus as recited in claim 1 , wherein the charging module obtains the descriptor when the USB hub is not coupled to a USB host.

       4. The apparatus as recited in claim 1 , wherein during the normal enumeration procedures, the USB host causing a descriptor read command to be transmitted to the defective USB device over the USB bus.

       5. The apparatus as recited in claim 1 , wherein the charging module initiates the optimal charging mode to charge the defective USB device when a USB host coupled to the USB hub is operated in a power saving state.

       6. The apparatus as recited in claim 1 , wherein the charging data comprises one or more fields that specify one or more voltages and a current to apply to associated signals on the USB bus.

       7. The apparatus as recited in claim 1 , wherein the specific descriptor entry further comprises remote wakeup capability corresponding to the defective USB device.

       8. A method for charging a defective Universal Serial Bus (USB) device according to an optimal charging mode, the method comprising:
 via a charging module, obtaining a descriptor of the defective USB device upon detection of the USB device on a USB bus;
 matching the descriptor with one of a plurality of descriptor entries stored in a memory of a charging module, wherein the one of a plurality of descriptor entries comprises:
 descriptor data, being arranged for matching the descriptor to a specific descriptor entry;
 charging data, being arranged for specifying the optimal charging mode for the USB device; and
 defective data, being arranged to indicate commands to be transmitted to the defective USB device to control internal hardware states in order to force a power saving state; and

 initiating the optimal charging mode on the USB bus to charge the defective USB device according to the charging data, wherein the charging module is disposed within a USB hub, and wherein the charging module obtains the descriptor by causing a descriptor read command to be transmitted to the defective USB device over the USB bus, and wherein when the USB hub is coupled to a USB host, issuing a reset command by the said USB hub to be transmitted to the defective USB device after obtaining the descriptor, thereby allowing for normal enumeration procedures by the said USB host.

       9. The method as recited in claim 8 , wherein the charging module obtains the descriptor when the USB hub is not coupled to a USB host.

       10. The method as recited in claim 8 , further comprising:
 during the normal enumeration procedures, causing a second descriptor read command to be transmitted to the defective USB device over the USB bus.
