Abstract

Ophthalmic compositions comprising 0.5 ppm to 5 ppm of alexidine, and 0.005 wt. % to 0.3 wt. % of glycereth-18-ethylhexanoate. The invention is also directed to the use of the ophthalmic compositions to clean and disinfect contact lenses, and in particular, soft, silicone, hydrogel contact lenses.

Claims

exact text as granted — not AI-modified
We claim:

       1. An ophthalmic composition with antimicrobial activity to Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Serratia marcescens, Candida albicans , and Fusarium solani , comprising borate buffered saline, about 2 ppm alexidine and 0.05 wt. % to 0.1 wt. % of glycereth-18-ethylhexanoate.

       2. The composition of claim 1 further comprising hyaluronic acid present from 0.005 wt. % to 0.1 wt. %.

       3. The composition of claim 1 further comprising α-[4-tris(2-hydroxyethyl)-ammonium chloride-2-butenyl]poly[1-dimethyl ammonium chloride-2-butenyl]-ω-tris(2-hydroxyethyl) ammonium chloride, which is present from 0.5 ppm to 3 ppm.

       4. The composition of claim 1 further comprising 0.01 wt. % to 1.0 wt. % of an amphoteric surfactant of general formula II

         wherein R 1  is R or —(CH 2 ) n —NHC(O)R, wherein R is a C 8 -C 16  alkyl optionally substituted with hydroxyl and n is 2, 3 or 4; R 2  and R 3  are each independently selected from methyl, ethyl, propyl or iso-propyl; and R 4  is a C 2 -C 8  alkylene optionally substituted with hydroxyl.

       5. The composition of  claim 4  wherein R 1  is R; R 2  and R 3  are each methyl; and R 4  is a C 2 -C 4  alkylene.

       6. The composition of claim 1 further comprising dexpanthenol, sorbitol, glycolic acid, 2-amino-2-methyl-1,3-propanediol or any mixture thereof.

       7. The composition of claim 1 further comprising propylene glycol, hydroxypropyl guar or myristamidopropyl dimethylamine.

       8. The composition of claim 1 further comprising hydroxypropylmethyl cellulose.

       9. An aqueous contact lens care solution composition with antimicrobial activity to Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Serratia marcescens, Candida albicans , and Fusarium solani , comprising:
 borate buffered saline;
 about 2 ppm of alexidine;
 0.5 ppm to 3 ppm α-[4-tris(2-hydroxyethyl)-ammonium chloride-2-butenyl]poly[1-dimethyl ammonium chloride-2-butenyl]-ω-tris(2-hydroxyethyl) ammonium chloride; and
 0.05 wt. % to 0.1 wt. % of glycereth-18-ethylhexanoate.

       10. The contact lens care solution of claim 9 further comprising a nonionic surfactant selected from poloxamer, poloxamine or any combination thereof.

       11. A method of cleaning and disinfecting a contact lens, the method comprising soaking the contact lens in the ophthalmic composition of claim 1 for at least two hours.

       12. The method of claim 11 further comprising inserting the cleaned and disinfected contact lens into the eye without rinsing the lens after soaking.

       13. The method of claim 11 wherein the ophthalmic composition further comprises 0.5 ppm to 3 ppm α-[4-tris(2-hydroxyethyl)-ammonium chloride-2-butenyl]poly[1-dimethyl ammonium chloride-2-butenyl]-ω-tris(2-hydroxyethyl) ammonium chloride.
