Abstract

A method for calculating a meal bolus in an insulin pump and an insulin pump are disclosed. The insulin pump includes a pump mechanism and a memory configured to store a plurality of food entries in a food database. The insulin pump also includes a programmable circuit arranged to control the pump mechanism and operatively connected to the memory. The programmable circuit is programmed to accept entry of one or more food entries into the food database. The programmable circuit is also programmed to associate each of the one or more food entries with a carbohydrate value. The programmable circuit is programmed to prompt selection of one or more food entries. The programmable circuit is further programmed to calculate a meal bolus based on the one or more food entries.

Claims

exact text as granted — not AI-modified

 accept entry of one or more food entries into the food database;
 associate each of the one or more food entries with a carbohydrate value;
 prompt selection of one or more food entries from the food database to define a meal; and
 automatically calculate an insulin meal bolus based on a total carbohydrate value of the selected one or more food entries defining the meal.

       2. The insulin pump of claim 1 , wherein the programmable circuit is further programmed to accept one or more names and categories for each food.

       3. The insulin pump of claim 2 , wherein the categories include one or more hierarchical levels of categories.

       4. The insulin pump of claim 1 , wherein at least one food entry represents a single food item.

       5. The insulin pump of claim 1 , wherein at least one food entry represents a meal, the meal including a plurality of food items.

       6. The insulin pump of claim 5 , wherein the programmable circuit is further programmed to allow entry of serving sizes for each of the plurality of food items.

       7. The insulin pump of claim 1 , wherein the one or more food entries include carbohydrate information.

       8. The insulin pump of claim 1 , wherein the one or more food entries include serving size information.

       9. The insulin pump of claim 1 , wherein the one or more food entries include nutritional information.

       10. The insulin pump of claim 1 , wherein the programmable circuit is further programmed to store the food entry in the memory as a custom bolus.

       11. The insulin pump of claim 1 , wherein the programmable circuit is further programmed to deliver a meal bolus via the pump mechanism.

       12. The insulin pump of claim 1 , wherein the meal bolus is calculated based on a total carbohydrate value representing a sum of the carbohydrate values associated with the selected food entries.

       13. The insulin pump of claim 1 , wherein the meal bolus is calculated based on nutritional information associated with the selected food entries.

       14. The insulin pump of claim 1 , wherein the programmable circuit is further programmed to prompt a user to input a serving size of the food entry.

       15. The insulin pump of claim 14 , wherein the programmable circuit is further programmed to limit the serving size based on a maximum deliverable meal bolus.

       16. The insulin pump of claim 1 , wherein the programmable circuit is further programmed to associate nutritional information with each of the one or more food entries.

       17. The insulin pump of claim 16 , wherein the nutritional information includes at least one of fiber, fat, or protein information.

       18. The insulin pump of claim 1 , wherein the programmable circuit is further programmed to, upon determination of nutritional information, transmit a message to the user, the message regarding food or insulin intake.

       19. The insulin pump of claim 18 , wherein the message includes one or more recommendations regarding timing and amount of meal consumption.

       20. The insulin pump of claim 18 , wherein the message includes one or more recommendations regarding timing and amount of bolus delivery.

       21. The insulin pump of claim 18 , wherein the nutritional information includes a glycemic index.

       22. The insulin pump of claim 1 , wherein the food entries comprise meals consumed by the user.

       23. The insulin pump of claim 1 , wherein the food database holds up to 500 food entries.

       24. The insulin pump of claim 1 , wherein the food database is customizable to include parameters related to dietary information.

       25. The insulin pump of claim 1 , wherein the programmable circuit is further programmed to associate one or more specific foods with a physical condition of the user.
