Abstract

A telecommunication system for bidirectional data transmission of a data set between a data transmission device and a data reception device via at least one packet-oriented network device, which includes encapsulation of the data set to enable a connection-oriented data transmission of the data set; connection-oriented transmission of the encapsulated data set by means of at least one mobile telephone from the data transmission device to a base station of a mobile telephone network; evaluation of the data encapsulation protocol in the base station for an unpacking of the data set to enable a packet-oriented data transmission of the data set; and packet-oriented transmission of the data set from the base station to the data reception device.

Claims

exact text as granted — not AI-modified
The invention claimed is:

       1. At a mobile telecommunications system network attached device a method for receiving and transmitting data sets for transmission between a mobile phone and an internet protocol (IP) network device comprising the following steps:
 for a data set being transmitted to the IP network device from the mobile phone:
 receiving from the mobile phone via a connection-oriented transmission a first encapsulated data set;
 evaluating a data encapsulation protocol for an unpacking of the data set to enable a packet-oriented data transmission of the data set, the data encapsulation protocol having been allocated to the data set by the mobile phone for the transmission of the data set to a base station of the mobile telecommunications system;
 unpacking the data set to form packet data;

 transmitting in a packet-switched fashion the packet data to the IP network device; and
 for data being transmitted from the IP network device to the mobile phone:
 receiving from the IP network device packet-switched data;
 packing the packet switched data using an encapsulation protocol to form a second encapsulated data set; and
 transmitting the encapsulated data set using a connection-oriented transmission to the mobile phone.

       2. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the evaluation of the data encapsulation protocol is performed in a connected radio network controller (RNC) device.

       3. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the base station supports both a connection-oriented and a packet-oriented data transmission.

       4. A mobile phone network attached device of a telecommunications system adapted for a transmission of a data set between a data transmission device and a data reception device via at least one packet-switched network device over which data is transmitted in a packet-oriented manner, the telecommunications system having
 a connection-oriented transmission mode for the transmission of the data set from supported connection-oriented transmission and packet-oriented transmission modes,
 wherein the network attached device is configured to support both a connection-oriented data transmission mode and a packet-oriented data transmission mode, wherein said network attached device is adapted to:
 evaluate an encapsulation protocol of an encapsulated data set received as a connection-oriented transmission over an air interface from at least one mobile phone to a base station of the mobile phone network;
 unpack the encapsulated data set to form one or more data packets comprising the data set; and
 transmit the data packets in a packet-switched manner to the data reception device.

       5. The mobile phone network attached device of claim 4 , wherein the mobile phone network attached device is a radio network controller.
