Abstract
An apparatus for magnetic recording having a barrier layer. One embodiment includes a magnetic head having an array of sensors, each of the sensors having a media facing surface. A barrier layer is positioned above at least the media facing surfaces of the sensors. The barrier layer includes at least one at least partially polycrystalline layer.
Claims
exact text as granted — not AI-modifiedWhat is claimed is:
1. An apparatus, comprising:
a magnetic head having an array of sensors, each of the sensors having a media facing surface;
a barrier layer above at least the media facing surfaces of the sensors, wherein the barrier layer comprises at least one at least partially polycrystalline layer, wherein the barrier layer includes a primarily unoxidized metallic layer; and
an insulating layer between the metallic layer and the media facing surfaces of the sensors.
2. An apparatus as recited in claim 1 , wherein the at least one at least partially polycrystalline layer includes an oxygen-enriched metal oxide.
3. An apparatus as recited in claim 2 , wherein the oxygen-enriched metal oxide is an oxide of at least one metal selected from a group consisting of aluminum, titanium and chromium.
4. An apparatus as recited in claim 1 , wherein the at least one at least partially polycrystalline layer includes an at least partially epitaxial polycrystalline aluminum oxide.
5. An apparatus as recited in claim 1 , wherein the barrier layer is at least 5 nm thick.
6. An apparatus as recited in claim 1 , wherein the media facing surfaces of the sensors are recessed from a plane of a substrate of the sensors.
7. An apparatus as recited in claim 6 , wherein the recession is at least 2 nm.
8. An apparatus as recited in claim 1 , wherein an upper surface of the at least one at least partially polycrystalline layer is polished for enhancing an abrasion resistance thereof.
9. An apparatus as recited in claim 1 , wherein the sensors include tunneling magnetoresistance sensors.
10. An apparatus as recited in claim 1 , wherein the sensors are of at least two differing types selected from a group consisting of giant magnetoresistance (GMR), anisotropic magnetoresistance (AMR), tunneling magnetoresistance (TMR), and inductive read sensors.
11. An apparatus as recited in claim 1 , further comprising:
a drive mechanism for passing a magnetic medium over the sensors; and
a controller electrically coupled to the sensors.
12. An apparatus, comprising:
a magnetic head having an array of tunneling magnetoresistance sensors, each of the tunneling magnetoresistance sensors having a media facing surface;
a barrier layer above at least the media facing surfaces of the tunneling magnetoresistance sensors,
wherein the barrier layer comprises at least one at least partially polycrystalline layer,
wherein the at least one at least partially polycrystalline layer includes an oxygen-enriched metal oxide,
wherein the barrier layer is at least 5 nm thick
wherein the barrier layer includes an unoxidized metallic layer; and
an insulating layer between the metallic layer and the media facing surfaces of the tunneling magnetoresistance sensors.
13. An apparatus as recited in claim 12 , wherein the oxygen-enriched metal oxide is an oxide of at least one metal selected from a group consisting of aluminum, titanium and chromium.
14. An apparatus as recited in claim 12 , wherein the barrier layer is less than 20 nm thick.
15. An apparatus as recited in claim 12 , wherein the media facing surfaces of the tunneling magnetoresistance sensors are recessed from a plane of a substrate of the tunneling magnetoresistance sensors.
16. An apparatus as recited in claim 12 , wherein an upper surface of the at least one at least partially polycrystalline layer is polished for enhancing an abrasion resistance thereof.
17. An apparatus as recited in claim 12 , further comprising sensors of at least one additional type selected from a group consisting of giant magnetoresistance (GMR), anisotropic magnetoresistance (AMR) and inductive read sensors.Cited by (0)
