Claims
Abstract
The liquid crystal composition having a negative dielectric anisotropy contains two ring compound having a large optical anisotropy and a negatively large dielectric anisotropy as the first component, three ring compound having a large maximum temperature and a large dielectric anisotropy as the second component, three ring compound having a large optical anisotropy and a large dielectric anisotropy as the third component, and two ring compound having a small viscosity as the fourth component. The liquid crystal display device contains the compositions.

1. A liquid crystal composition that has a negative dielectric anisotropy and contains at least one compound selected from the group of compounds represented by formula (1) as a first component, at least one compound selected from the group of compounds represented by formula (2) as a second component, at least one compound selected from the group of compounds represented by formula (3) as a third component and at least one compound selected front the group of compounds represented by formula (4-2) as a fourth component:
wherein R 1 , R 3 and R 5 are independently alkyl having 1 to 12 carbons, alkoxy having 1 to 12 carbons, or alkenyl containing only one double bond and having 2 to 12 carbons; R 2 , R 4 , and R 6 are independently alkyl having 1 to 12 carbons, alkoxy having 1 to 12 carbons, or alkenyl having 2 to 12 carbons; R 7 is independently alkyl having 1 to 12 carbons or alkoxy having 1 to 12 carbons; ring A is 1,4-cycrohexylene, or 1,4-pnenylene; X 1 , X 2 , X 3 and X 4 are independently fluorine or chlorine; Y 1 is independently hydrogen or methyl; Z 1 is independently a single bond or ethylene.
2. The liquid crystal composition according to claim 1 , wherein the second component is at least one compound selected front the group of compounds represented by formula (2-1) or formula (2-2):
wherein R 3 and R 4 are independently alkyl having 1 to 12 carbons, alkoxy having 1 to 12 carbons, or alkenyl having 2 to 12 carbons.
3. The liquid crystal composition according to claim 1 , wherein the third component is at least one compound selected from the group of compounds represented by formula (3-1):
wherein R 5 and R 6 are independently alkyl having 1 to 12 carbons, alkoxy having 1 to 12 carbons, or alkenyl having 2 to 12 carbons.
4. The liquid crystal composition according to claim 2 , wherein the second component is at least one compound selected from the group of compounds represented by formula (2-1).
5. The liquid crystal composition according to claim 2 , wherein the second component is at least one compound selected from the group of compounds represented by formula (2-2).
6. The liquid crystal composition according to claim 1 , wherein a ratio of the first component is in the range of 10% by weight to 75% by weight, and a ratio of the second component is in the range of 10% by weight to 75% by weight, a ratio of the third component is in the range of 5% by weight to 70% by weight and a ratio of the fourth component is in the range of 10% by weight to 75% by weight based on the total weight of the liquid crystal composition.
7. The liquid crystal composition according to claim 1 , further containing at least one compound selected from the group of compounds represented by formula (5) as a fifth component:
wherein R 11 and R 12 are independently alkyl having 1 to 12 carbons, alkoxy having 1 to 12 carbons, alkenyl having 2 to 12 carbons or alkenyl having 2 to 12 carbons in which hydrogen is replaced with fluorine; ring B, ring C or ring D are independently 1,4-cyclohexylene, 1,4-phenylene, 2-fluoro-1,4 phenylene, or 3-fluoro-1,4 phenylene; Z 2 and Z 3 are independently a single bond, ethylene, methyleneoxy carbonyloxy; m is 0, 1 or 2 and at least one of ring C and ring D is 1,4-phenylene when m is 0.
8. The liquid crystal composition according to claim 7 , wherein the fifth component is at least one compound selected from the group of compounds represented by formula (5-1) to formula (5-12):
wherein R 11 and R 12 are independently alkyl having 1 to 12 carbons, alkoxy having 1 to 12 carbons, alkenyl having 2 to 12 carbons or alkenyl having 2 to 12 carbons in which hydrogen is replaced with fluorine.
9. The liquid crystal composition according to claim 7 , wherein a ratio of the fifth component is in the range of 5% by weight to 40% by weight based on the total weight of the liquid crystal composition.
10. The liquid crystal composition according to claim 1 , further containing at least one compound selected from the group of compounds represented by formula (6-1) or formula (6-2) as a sixth component:
wherein R 13 and R 14 are independently alkyl having 1 to 12 carbons, alkoxy having 1 to 12 carbons or alkenyl having 2 to 12 carbons;
ring E and ring F are independently 1,4-cyclohexylene or 1,4-phenylene; Z 4 is independently a single bond, ethylene or methyleneoxy; Z 5 and Z 6 are independently a single bond, ethylene, methyleneoxy or carbonyloxy; X 5 and X 6 are independently fluorine or chlorine; p is 0, 1 or 2, q is 0 or 1, and the sum of p and q is 1 or 2.
11. The liquid crystal composition according to claim 10 , wherein the sixth component is at least one compound selected from the group of compounds represented by formula (6-1-1) to formula (6-1-3) and formula (6-2-1) to formula (6-2-5)
wherein R 13 and R 14 are independently alkyl having 1 to 12 carbons, alkoxy having 1 to 12 carbons or alkenyl having 2 to 12 carbons.
12. The liquid crystal composition according to claim 10 , wherein a ratio of the sixth component is in the range of 5% by weight to 40% by weight based on the total weight of the liquid crystal composition.
13. The liquid crystal composition according to claim 1 , wherein a maximum temperature of a nematic phase is 70° C. or higher, an optical anisotropy (25° C.) at a wavelength of 589 nanometers is 0.08 or more and a dielectric anisotropy (25° C.) at a frequency of 1 kHz is −2 or less.
14. A liquid crystal display device, containing the liquid crystal composition according to claim 1 .
15. The liquid crystal display device according to claim 14 , wherein an operating mode in the liquid crystal display device is a VA mode, an IPS mode, an FFS mode or a PSA mode, and a driving mode in the liquid crystal display device is an active matrix mode.
16. The liquid crystal composition according to claim 7 , further containing at least one compound selected from the group of compounds represented by formula (6-1) or formula (6-2) as a sixth component:
wherein R 13 and R 14 are independently alkyl having 1 to 12 carbons, aikoxy having 1 to 12 carbons or alkenyl having 2 to 12 carbons;
ring E and ring F are independently 1,4-cyclohexylene or 1,4-phenylene; Z 4 is independently a single bond, ethylene or methyleneoxy; Z 5 and Z 6 are independently a single bond, ethylene, methyleneoxy or carbonyloxy; X 5 and X 6 are independently fluorine or chlorine; p is 0, 1 or 2, q is 0 or 1, and the sum of p and q is 1 or 2.
17. The liquid crystal composition according to claim 16 , wherein the sixth component is at least one compound selected from the group of compounds represented by formula (6-1-1) to formula (6-1-3) and formula (6-2-1) to formula (6-2-5)
wherein R 13 and R 14 are independently alkyl having 1 to 12 carbons, alkoxy having 1 to 12 carbons or alkenyl having 2 to 12 carbons.
18. A liquid crystal composition that has a negative dielectric anisotropy and consists essentially of at least one compound selected from the group of compounds represented by formula (1) as a first component, at least one compound selected from the group of compounds represented by formula (2) as a second component, at least one compound selected from the group of compounds represented by formula (3) as a third component, at least one compound selected from the group of compounds represented by formula (4-2) as a fourth component, and at least one compound selected from the group of compounds represented by formula (5) as a fifth component, and optionally contains at least one compound selected from the group of compounds represented by formula (6-1) as a sixth component, and/or at least one compound selected from the group of compounds represented by formula (4-1) as a further fourth component, wherein the at least one compound as the fourth component includes compound 3-HH-V shown below, and wherein a ratio of the first component is in the range of 5% by weight to 50% by weight, a ratio of the fourth component is in the range of 20% by weight to 60% by weight and a ratio of the fifth component is in the range of 10% by weight to 35% by weight based on the total weight of the liquid crystal composition:
wherein R 1 , R 3 and R 5 are independently alkyl having 1 to 12 carbons, alkoxy having 1 to 12 carbons, or alkenyl containing only one double bond and having 2 to 12 carbons; R 2 , R 4 , and R 6 are independently alkoxy having 1 to 12 carbons, R 7 , R 9 and R 10 are independently alkyl having 1 to 12 carbons or alkoxy having 1 to 12 carbons; R 11 and R 12 are independently alkyl having 1 to 12 carbons, alkoxy having 1 to 12 carbons, alkenyl having 2 to 12 carbons or alkenyl having 2 to 12 carbons in which hydrogen is replaced with fluorine; R 13 and R 14 are independently alkyl having 1 to 12 carbons, alkoxy having 1 to 3 carbons or alkenyl having 2 to 12 carbons; ring A is 1,4-cyclohexylene or 1,4-phenylene; ring B, ring C or ring D are independently 1,4-cyclohexylene, 1,4-phenylene, 2-fluro-1,4 phenylene, or 3-fluro-1,4 phenylene; X 1 , X 2 , X 3 , X 4 , X 5 and X 6 are independently fluorine or chlorine; Y 1 is independently hydrogen or methyl; Z 1 is independently a single bond or ethylene; Z 2 and Z 3 are independently a single bond, ethylene, methyleneoxy or carbonyloxy; Z 4 is independently a single bond, ethylene or methyleneoxy; m is 0, 1 or 2 and at least one of ring C and ring D is 1,4-phenylene when m is 0.
19. The liquid crystal composition according to claim 18, wherein the second component is at least one compound selected from the group of compounds represented by formula (2-1) or formula (2-2):
wherein R 3 and R 4 are independently alkoxy having 1 to 12 carbons.
20. The liquid crystal composition according to claim 18, wherein the third component is at least one compound selected from the group of compounds represented by formula (3-1):
wherein R 5 is independently alkyl having 1 to 12 carbons, alkoxy having 1 to 12 carbons, or alkenyl containing only one double bond and having 2 to 12 carbons; R 6 is alkoxy having 1 to 12 carbons.
21. The liquid crystal composition according to claim 19, wherein the second component is at least one compound selected from the group of compounds represented by formula (2-1).
22. The liquid crystal composition according to claim 18, wherein a ratio of the fourth component is in the range of 27% by weight to 60% by weight based on the total weight of the liquid crystal composition.
23. The liquid crystal composition according to claim 18, wherein a ratio of the first component is in the range of 10% by weight to 50% by weight, and a ratio of the second component is in the range of 10% by weight to 45% by weight, a ratio of the third component is in the range of 5% by weight to 50% by weight and a ratio of the fourth component is in the range of 20% by weight to 60% by weight based on the total weight of the liquid crystal composition.
24. The liquid crystal composition according to claim 23, wherein the fifth component is at least one compound selected from the group of compounds represented by formula (5-1) to formula (5-12):
wherein R 11 and R 12 are independently alkyl having 1 to 12 carbons, alkoxy having 1 to 12 carbons, alkenyl having 2 to 12 carbons or alkenyl having 2 to 12 carbons in which hydrogen is replaced with fluorine.
25. The liquid crystal composition according to claim 18, further containing at least one compound selected from the group of compounds represented by formula (6-1) as the sixth component:
wherein R 13 and R 14 are independently alkyl having 1 to 12 carbons, alkoxy having 1 to 3 carbons or alkenyl having 2 to 12 carbons; Z 4 is independently a single bond, ethylene or methyleneoxy; X 5 and X 6 are independently fluorine or chlorine.
26. The liquid crystal composition according to claim 25, wherein the sixth component is at least one compound selected from the group of compounds represented by formula (6-1-1) to formula (6-1-3):
wherein R 13 and R 14 are independently alkyl having 1 to 12 carbons, alkoxy having 1 to 3 carbons or alkenyl having 2 to 12 carbons.
27. The liquid crystal composition according to claim 25, wherein a ratio of the sixth component is in the range of 5% by weight to 40% by weight based on the total weight of the liquid crystal composition.
28. The liquid crystal composition according to claim 18, wherein a maximum temperature of a nematic phase is 70° C. or higher, an optical anisotropy (25° C.) at a wavelength of 589 nanometers is 0.08 or more and a dielectric anisotropy (25° C.) at a frequency of 1 kHz is −2 or less.
29. A liquid crystal display device, containing the liquid crystal composition according to claim 18.
30. The liquid crystal display device according to claim 29, wherein an operating mode in the liquid crystal display device is a VA mode, an IPS mode, an FFS mode or a PSA mode, and a driving mode in the liquid crystal display device is an active matrix mode.Cited by (0)
